You better break out the chainsaw file and make a notch for the mag release. I've done that before several times. Fortunately I caught it before I sent them off.
I've often thought of making some similar to that, just to be unique and different but I see somebody done beat me to it.
I did make a set where the wood came around the front down near the mag well. Forcing a high hand hold. Felt great. Tough to make and with wood I'm not sure how durable they would be. I made them for somebody here a few years back, can't remember now.
I started to make myself a set, I'll have to check the drawer and see if I still got them.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

I had a Smith 4516, it was a great gun, not sure why I no longer have it, another one I regret parting with.
Been pondering a Rock 9mm among others lately. They seem to have risen in price considerable in the last few years.
Heard folks have pretty good luck with them.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

That set you described making sounds like some Fitz and Pointer made back in the day. I believe both companies made theirs out of plastic.
KSD Custom grips makes something similar and quite a bit like the grips on my P210.

Get a Rock! My 9 has been an excellent gun
For plinking fun, one of these (or ATI's less expensive equivalent) and +4 followers will do nicely

The grips I described are very much like the 210 only mine were solid and met in the front. They were quite comfortable at least for my size hand.
I looked this morning and can't find them anywhere, I thought I'd made at least part of them when I did the set for a member so I'd have kind of a pattern. Thought sure I had them but they are hiding good.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

Greg, KSD makes some of the most amazing grips I’ve seen and that set really makes your gun!!!
However, I think those grips look similar to the set that came on my SIG P210 (see photo below):
I think the P210 should be right at home in this thread because it has a bit of 1911 feel to it

Plus it's one of the most beautiful guns I've ever seen and I never tire of looking at it.
It fits well in any thread.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

I let another friend shoot it today. He fired a magazines worth from 15 yards, shooting two handed while standing. If I hadn't watched all 8 rounds hit, I wouldn't have believed him if he had shown me the target. I cut that section out of the cardboard and will stick it on the wall of my garage:
Yep, 5 rounds through that less than dime size hole in the sticker he was aiming at.
If you want a higher resolution photo of the 210, there is one here: https://postimg.cc/cr1H0rfh
Anyway, keeping on with 1911 pics, here's my SR1911 with a short trigger and more agressive grips installed:
I'll also toss in a shot of my Springfield Armory 1990's Edition (that's the name on the box):
