  • New production - Short barrel vs Long barrel

Does anyone know if a replacement 10.5" barrel will fit on a long-barrel, new production Thompson?
If it does, it seems to me that it might be more economical to buy a long-barrel weapon, then replace that barrel with a short replacement.
I saw one online listed for $185, but didn't get details.
Does the Stamp Act apply here?
    Thanks for your help!

I would certainly imagine that the 10.5 inch barrel would fit on the standard Thompson. I believe that the new shorter barrel would have to be fitted by a gunsmith though. Most importantly is that you would need to get the $200 Tax Stamp by completing and submitting to ATF a Form 1 to build a Short Barreled Rifle before actually doing such a swap. Currently wait times for the stamp are running about three months after submission.

5 months, and one week;...> I sent in a Form-1 for SBR on a PPsh, and just got it back......They say they are swamped.

Yup. It will fit...I've got one on my new-model Thompson, and it fit perfectly. I used a barrel wrench borrowed from a friend, but you can do it yourself with a pipe wrench, a vise, and some leather pads (to keep from scarring the barrel). Just be sure to seat it completely, and use some blue Lok-tite on the threads for good measure.

First and foremost, though, even before getting the barrel, you've got to have that SBR tax stamp, or you'll be in a heap-o-crap with the ATF.

Like JW said, the wait for the stamp is a bit long now (back when I got mine, it took less than 2 weeks)....

Many thanks to those replies! I apologize for the lateness of this reply. Just been very busy at work.
Seems like it would just be less trouble overall to just get the SBR to start with. Gotta love what Uncle Sam has morphed into (tax collector-wise:7 and what is prompting the flood of applications since about, oh, last Nov.
Thanks again for the words of wisdom!

From what I hear, it would take just as long....if not longer...to acquire it through Kahr....

I saw a post somewhere that a guy is still waiting since February or March for Kahr to ship his SBR to the dealer.

I made my own SBR using the original barrel. Check the link below...

I bought the factory SBR figuring that a 10.5" barrel would cost $200.00 plus $100.00 to install it, then you have to get the receiver engraving done and with all the shipping and waiting...

Was it about the same waiting time?

Ya know, that's interesting, I was told by a bunch of friends that since the NFA moved to West Virginia, the wait time to process a form-1 packet was significantly less that what it was when they were in DC. Well, looks like I'm gonna find out, sent out a form-1 on my Kahr M-1 the other day.

Incidentally, Numerich has the best price on replacement short barrels, 10.5 finned and threaded P/N 516390 for $130, and 10.5 smooth P/N 516460 for $117.

I tied a leather thong to the sight-end of mine, and keep it in the car as a defense club....
