  • K series slide stop break in

Hey everyone, quick question for ya. How many rounds do I need to fire through my K40 before I can break it down without a screwdriver? LOL. My CW9 could be disassembled without pounding on the pin after about 200 rounds. Every time I go to the range I get my hopes up when I get home and clean it that ill be able to use thumb power on my K40, but im always disappointed haha.

    Just curious, thanks.

There is a U-Tube video called K-9 Trick. If you can view it maybe what he does to pop out his slide stop might work for you.

... ill be able to use thumb power on my K40
Probably never. the spring holding it in is stronger than the spring on other Kahr models that disassemble with only thumb power.

I use a magazine base to push the pin, while holding the slide in the proper position. The slide stop pops out completely from the gun. Try it. At least you won't need another tool for disassembly.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

There is a little orange plastic tool that came with my K9 that you insert between the breech face and barrel. It holds the slide open just enough to align the cutout in the slide with the tab on the slide stop lever. It makes it a little easier to remove the slide stop lever.

Kahr sells it on their website, but you could use any piece of wood or plastic that is the right thickness.
If you'd like, I can post a picture of it when I get home.

I used a Sharpie pen held in my mouth to prop open the slide at the proper distance and then used a screwdriver handle to tap the pin flush with the frame. Then it's easy to pull the slide lock out. I eventually bought one of the orange blocks for that when I was ordering a bunch of stuff from Kahr... $5 each.

I got my K9 in early '98 and have had Trijicon replace the Night Sights after 12 years... relamping... and mine is still on the original recoil spring... tight! I do have a spare spring, but I don't have anywhere near 1,500 rounds, yet. Now I have too many other pistols to shoot!

I've had my K9 since March and have put close to a 1000 rounds through her and I still need my small rubber mallet to punch the pin out. I'm guessing it's not going to get any easier.

I use a chopstick in my mouth to insert in the breach to align the marks, inserting the pointed end and adjusting it until it is just right.
                  Very interesting...

I just viewed the UTube video “Kahr K9 Trick” and tried it on my mk9 and the pin actually popped out with just a little pressure from the other side on the pin. With an empty mag in you pull the slide back with pressure from your finger on the other side of the pin and when the notch in the slide is lined up the pin just pops out. I can take down the mk9 easily the normal way but I wanted to see if the empty mag made a difference and it does.

That sure doesn't work on mine! It's tight.

Yeah, that K9 "trick" never worked for me either. I grip the gun in such a way that I can hold the slide in the correct position with one hand and then tap the slide with an empty mag.

Those of you using chop sticks and sharpies to hold the slide, you need to work on hand strength lol.

I know the mk series is not exactly like the K series but with the mag in and a little pressure on the slide stop I pulled back the slide to the takedown notch and the stop just pops out with a click on both my mk40 & mk9.

what ripley 16 says is correcft. It won't get any easier and u should be glad that it doesnt, as that spring also works the slide lock lever to lock open on the last round. That tension is there by design,. "live with it"
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border
