  • My K9 EDC

I thought I would share this photo of my K9 with some other junk I routinely carry. I've tried a lot of guns for CCW and this K9 is the best I've had for the task.

My SIG P239 serves as my secondary CCW. I bought the P938 SAS to carry but it's too pretty.

I never could fully warm up to my MK9 and ending up selling it. It was too short/chunky, like a Glock 26 but not quite as bad as that.

But I recently acquired this customized CZ 75 P-01. It is very impressive and might start seeing some holster action in lieu of my K9.

Excellent photos, great collection. Question; how did you get the MK9 laser to stay on?
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

I've shared that photo in a few places but surprisingly you're the first person to ask about that.

I did it through a bit of Photoshop trickery. I took two photos, one with the laser off and one with the laser on which of course showed my hand. Then I stacked the photos in Photoshop and used a layer mask to select which parts of each photo I wanted to be visible. The hardest part was keeping the gun still. Because of all the straight lines, if there was any movement between the shots it was pretty apparent. I think I had to try it a dozen times or so.

                Laser Off:

                Laser On:

                Photoshop:
I highlighted the layer with the mask here. The mask is the white/black rectangle to the right of the layer icon. Only the parts of the photo that correspond to the white parts of the mask show and it will appear on top of the layer below it. You just use the paint brush tool to paint on the mask; white=visible, black=not visible. You can use shades of gray between white and black to make the layer visible to varying degrees. Layer masks are one of the things that makes Photoshop really nice. I use them extensively to selectively apply color and contrast effects to different parts of photographs. You can see a mask used a few layers up as well (black oval) on a "Levels" layer that is used to apply a vignette to the photo.

I would like to see a gun shop set up their display cases like you did for your photos. They should also clean up their guns like you did.

                    Oh yea, great job!

Thank you, that's quite a compliment.

I know what you mean about the dirty guns. For most guns it would take less than 10 minutes to field strip them, wipe them down with a shop towel, and run a bore snake through them. I've never understood why that isn't done. Used cars are cleaned up before putting them on display. But it can work to the buyer's advantage too if they can spot a diamond in the rough.

Very first picture of the K9, what's up with the barrel?

                            Looks like it is ported.

I found one of these for 1/2 price on eBay and decided to try it. I like it quite a bit but I probably would not pay full price for one. The previous owner did a beautiful polish job on it. I would say that it does help some with felt recoil but that is largely subjective. I have not noticed a blinding fire ball in lower light as I read about happening with ported barrels.
