  • K9 slide Release Issue

Picked up a very nice condition 2002 manufactured k9 today.

With the magazine inserted the slide release is difficult or in possible to function - must release magazine lock and drop mag ever so slightly after which it released effortless.

This is with an unloaded unit - have not tried it with rounds yet.

    Advice?

    Thanks!

That's the way a K9 or any Kahr slide lock functions.Take a look at the manual, you will find this issue is pointed out.

Thank you - I have had a PM9 for some time and do not recall needing to drop the magazine in order to operate the slide release. I'll revisit the manual.

Thank you for reminding me to visit the manual - I guess that I have not closed the slide on an empty chamber on my PM9 in some time.

NOTE REGARDING SLIDE RELEASE OPERA- TION: When the slide is held open on an empty magazine, the slide release is very hard to depress. This warns the shooter that the maga- zine is empty.
To easily release the slide, either remove the empty magazine or replace it with a loaded mag- azine. Depressing the slide release will then be much easier.

It's not a good practice to drop the slide without chambering a round. It's the equivalent of slamming a screen door. Ease the slide forward if the mag is empty.

It's one thing that drives me crazy.......................seeing people in firearm stores, racking slides and slamming them home.............one of the many reasons that I would never purchase a firearm from the counter. Especially when they do it with 1911's.

                  +1

I had a MaxiComp 1911 race gun built by Ed Brown in the late 80s (how's that for name dropping &#128512

When I went to pick it up, he emphasized never to drop the slide on an empty chamber. Then he showed me a hammer and sear that started out at a perfect 4 pound trigger. But the owner kept dropping the slide on an empty chamber and ended with a bad case of hammer follow. You could clearly see the damage to the hammer and sear engagement surface. And also the lugs on the underside on the barrel.

All semiauto pistols can be damaged by dropping the slide on an empty chamber, not just 1911s.

They must think it's "cool". Makes me shudder when I see it happen to a 1911.

We say it jokingly all the time, but this time its true - this is a feature, not a flaw: When the mag is empty (ie when the last round is fired,) the slide locks open.
For the same reason, if you put an empty mag in the receiver and draw the slide back, it stays open by itself.
                      Rest in peace Muggsy
