    Help!

I purchased a 2nd-hand Kahr K9 Saturday. All indications were that it was unfired. I disassembled if for a basic check and lube, then reassembled it and headed to the range. I did note during reassembly that the slide seemed to be heavily sprung, but I figured that a small, lightweight 9mm would probably have a stouter spring than a 9mm 1991, so let it pass.

At the range, the gun worked flawlessly through a box of 147gr Winchester 9mm ammo.

After I arrived home I again disassembled the gun for cleaning and noted that the recoil spring was deformed, with a "swelled" coil near the middle as if the spring was forced to run over itself during compression (over-compression). I also noted that the recoil spring guide showed significant battering at the back end, and the guide rod itself showed substantial wear as if the spring was binding heavily along the guide. See pictures below:

I went back to the gun store where the gun was purchased to inspect another Kahr K9, and noted that the spring in their K9 had 20 coils while the spring in my K9 had 22.5 coils. It seems to me that the spring is simply too large and was completely compressed during cycling, causing spring damage as well as damage to the recoil guide (the frame looks fine, though).

Can someone tell me how many coils there are supposed to be in the recoil spring of a K9?

    Thanks,

    Beuford

Welcome to the forum. I looked at the recoil springs in my K40 and E9 and the spare one on hand, all have 19.5 coils. I'm sure they are Wolff springs as I replace all the springs, including mags, in newly acquired used pistols with their products. Also checked out the back of the guide rods, neither had any damage like yours. Kahr Arms sells the guide rod for $3.30 and the recoil spring for $9.00 plus shipping. The steel Kahrs are awesome pistols. Good shooting.

I have a spare Wolff K9/K40 spring and it has about 20 and 1/8 coils with an 18.0 pound REDUCED POWER load rating... stock#50518. I just noticed the Reduced power rating, so not sure if I have any other ones.

Where does the smaller spring go? Extractor?

Thank you for all your replies. It seems the recoil spring, as I suspected, is incorrect.

I'm curious how this spring got into the gun. Does anyone know the coil count on a T9 recoil spring? Maybe this spring is for a T9.

My K9 was also bought used and it had more than a few problems. Had to send it to the mothership. They replaced all the springs for me and now it runs perfect.

I have a K9 with over 11k rds on the original internals (everything, including springs) and it still shoots flawless unless I feed it weak junk. It's had over 6k rds of Russian steel case 115gr (AA919RFMJ) and still clocks an average of 1198fps

New factory spring and stainless steel rod on left. Original spring and rod with a couple thousand rounds fired on right. Did you put the spring on the right way?
