  • Older K9 - questions

Hi, just picked up a nice used black K9 from 96-ish. AD0xxx serial number. Overall it seems to be in good shape, but I have a few questions hopefully someone can help me with:

    1. What springs and other parts should be checked and or replaced?

    2. The rear sight has a small set screw that seems to be stripped. I can get the sight out and replace it, but is it a standard size dovetail?

    3. According to the serial number research page it says my pistol is: "blackened, not stamped SS". What does this mean? Carbon steel slide and not stainless? Or???

Heading to the range tomorrow to try it out. Thanks in advance for your help!

Recoil spring at least. Not sure about your other questions but I bet someone else will chime in soon. Let us know how it goes.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

        Welcome

1- I agree the recoil spring might need replaced. The gun should be fairly stiff to rack, the felt recoil should be soft and it should return fully to battery every time.
2- there is an old and a new style dovetail. Sights made for the Kahr old style slide should fit your gun.
3- I'm not 100% on this one but a 1996 vintage could indeed be carbon steel instead of stainless. The first K9s were carbon.

The sight sounds interesting. Early on, Kahr had some Miniature Machine Co. (MMC) fixed and adjustable sets; I don't remember if they ever offered their tritium options. They look Bo-Mar(ish) and mount to the dovetail with (2) TINY set screws (hex) rear of the sight face; the adustables have another TINY hex on the right side. I have two sets of them and they have held up very well for 22 years. I can remember installing/adjusting those things and thinking the wrench was about to snap.

Of course the originals could have been replaced with anything along the way.
          Bad decisions make good stories...

Meh. It failed to feed every second round in the magazine (for 5 mags worth). It would nosedive, but only the second round, and I was using good speer ammo, no WWB.

It is very stiff to rack (like my CM9 when I first got it), so I'm wondering if this K9 has been shot very little.

other that that I like it. Not sure how to proceed at this point.

Here's one thread on the first/second round nosedive. There are probably others. I hope it helps.

Awesome! I'm going to strip it tonight and see if this may be the culprit. Thanks!

Stripped it and inserted a full mag with the slide stop pin in place. It was definitely hanging up on the tab. A couple quick swipes with a file and I think I'm good to go. I'll try it out this weekend to be sure. Thanks again!
