  • New K9 My First Kahr!

I saw a NIB K9093 with night sites at my LGS for $599 and spent some time with it at the counter. I have very small hands and cannot even shoot a K-frame S&W. The Browning High Power works very well, and I can shoot the S&W J-frame, Ruger SP-101, as well as the 1911. Glocks are also too large in the grip for me, as well as the S&W M&P (all models and backstraps).

Anyway, the K9 felt like it was custom made for my hand, and the trigger was probably the best I ever encountered (I love the action of a nice custom tuned revolver and the K9 seemed even better), as well as the overall balance. I could tell it would be a perfect CCW pistol, as well as an enjoyable range gun. I spent a few days thinking it over, during which I read most of the posts on this K9 sub-forum. Posts by joko and Bawana were especially helpful.

A few days later, I went back, and I traded my beloved scratched up Ruger 3" SP-101, and two unopened Safariland speed loaders, put $300 cash with it and went home with the new K9. I had been spending $18 to $20 per 50 rounds for "cheap" .38 range ammo and $26 per 20 rounds of Golden Saber mid-range magnums, but I had to order all my ammo online. At least now I buy 9mm ammo locally. I checked the serial number with Kahr, and it was made in the Spring of 2013. The LGS said it had been sitting at the distributor because customers wanted the polymer models, so the distributor had it discounted. I got the K9 with night sites for the price of a K9 with standard sites.

I have joko's sticky for new Kahr prep, and I will follow it to the letter. After that, I will still have to fire 200 rounds of FMJ for the break in. After it is broken in, I will most likely keep it loaded with +P Gold Dots or Corbon. Anyone found a particular range ammo the the K9 seems to like?

Welcome to the forum. You have a good pistol there. Let us know how it goes. I dont have a K9 but i think the concensus is gold dots work well. I have used gold dots in mg kahrs.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Welcome. I've shot only brass in my Kahrs but any good brand should do. I've heard reports that Blazer Aluminum shoots well too. I do find that the heavier 9mm loads seem to be more accurate = 124 and 147gr.

I like to practice with NATO 124gr ball ammo in my 9mm pistols. It is fairly cheap, it's accurate, clean and is a tad hotter than some other range fodder so it feels closer to "carry" ammo. Good luck with your new Kahr.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

Thanks for the welcome ygtszhj. I think I am really going to love the K9. I have been working the slide and dry firing. It has an fantastic trigger like a custom pistol! The only thing I would change is maybe a little dehorning of the slide serrations, rear night sight, trigger guard, and the bottom of the slide stop lever, but I can live with it as it is for some time.

I was a little nervous about the Spring 2013 Born On Date because I new that some manufacturers were hard pressed to produce firearms during the scare and were selling everything they could turn out. There were some QC issues with some manufacturers at the time. However, my K9 looked to have a polished feed ramp despite not being an Elite model. I chambered a round of FMJ and ejected it last night to examine the bullet and case. There was only one short superficial scratch on the brass case. That is the best I have seen so far with a new out of the box pistol. It looks like Kahr may have done some feed ramp and chamber polishing. It is a good clue to indicate good manufacturing QC despite being made in early 2013. This appears to be a very high end Tier One pistol. I think I made an excellent choice. The LGS is also a 5-star tactical range. They gave me an all day range pass with the K9 purchase. I just need to buy another 150 rounds of FMJ for the break in before I use the pass. I just bought a box of Blazer Brass 115g, but I am thinking that 124g would give the recoil springs a better work out to break it in.

Anyone have any thoughts on preferred FMJ range ammo for the K9? I have also read that it is good to clean a new pistol at least every 50 rounds during break in. Any thoughts there?

Thanks for the info about the accuracy of 124 g FMJ. All that is available locally is cheap 115 g. Some of it, like the WWB, seems to be downloaded somewhat. I would have to order 124 g online. Since I will likely carry with the Gold Dot 124 g +P, 124 g FMJ range ammo would make sense.

Thanks ripley 16. Winchester offers 50 round boxes of NATO ball in white boxes. I will try it. Since I will likely carry the Gold Dot, a full powered 124 g FMJ range ammo makes the most sense. I once had a C-Series Browning High Power that I am still kicking myself for selling. I ran GECO 124 g FMJ at the range. It seemed pretty hot, and I suspect it was at or close to NATO spec. It was also cheap to shoot, and it still is. GECO has a bi-metal jacket and will attract a magnet, so some ranges will not allow it. My closest range will not allow the GECO round, but another just a few miles further out is rated for the Barrett rifle, and they have no problem with it.
