  • Kahr K4043A New Sight recomendation

Was hoping that someone may suggest a set of aftermarket or Kahr sights for my K40 4043A. I have owbed the firearm for a number of years and absolutly love it as one of my favorite to CCW. The original sites just do not work for me as I can't keep a steady bead on the target. I am an avid shooter and can keep very tight groups but, with this pistol, I am all over the target. Before having the firearm checked out for accuracy, I want to try a new set of sights.

Therefore I am asking if anyone has a good recommendation for me to look into. I am color blind (not severely) and do where glasses (I am near sighted).
    Open to suggestions.

Thanks Much and a great forum
    Gabe

I, like you, am color deficient(no such thing as colorblind) and nearsighted with astigmatism. Owning an MK with dot the eye sights, I prefer them over 3 dot. It allows you to concentrate on the front sight only, instead of trying to place the front sight in to a square, then centering. Being color deficient, there is no color except for white, that I can see well enough to use. My shooting changed for the better when I installed XS Big Dots on a firearm of mine. It was like night and day. No more searching for a particular hold to use. Cover the bullseye with the front sight, and shoot. It's improved my shooting with that firearm, along with my MK, because the basic system is the same. Dot the eye.............................only the front sight is ALOT larger, and much easier to see. I have the night sight version. I am not sure if this will help you keep a steady bead on the target. I am sure that you know, unless you do a lot of shooting, .40 cal. isn't the easiest to shoot. Not everyone can shoot all of their firearms with the same accuracy, unless they shoot them all, frequently. Could be the trigger changes from firearm to firearm. I can shoot my HK very well, but then my M&P takes a while to get zoned in, just because of the different trigger. I have also found, being old, is sometimes your arms start getting tired from being extended. I have found that I shoot my MK more accurately, if I bend my left elbow a bit(right handed). I wouldn't try to dissuade you from getting Big Dots, but I think you may need some adjustments when shooting the Kahr. I grew up shooting revolvers a lot, so I was more comfortable with the Kahr triggers.

I thank you very much for the suggestion, and believe it or not, the XS BIG DOT is where I was leaning.

I like you have been shooting for close to 35 years. I am also a revolver person. My preference's to shoot are my Ruger SP 101.357 and S&W.41. So truth be told, the .40 gives me a bit of an anticipated kick, which never really happens. So its possible that I flinch when I really have nothing to flinch at.

I always use the Weaver Stance. Which is similar to yours but taking the right foot and stepping back while placing your body weight on the left foot. Very comfortable and natural for me.

You are correct these Auto's are a whole different breed.

Believe it or not, I had the worst flinch with my MK, just because it was so long of a pull. I am also right handed and left eye dominant, which doesn't make things any easier. I grew up on revolvers and when I made the switch to semi's, I liked sa/da the best. Still do............................I see a lot of .40's for sale. Many people just can't shoot them. I've had instructors tell me that they can't hit the side of a barn with a .40. They are a handful, especially out of short barrel firearms. I'm no expert, been shooting .40 for quite some time.................getting better, with the help of those Big Dots, and sticking to my guns. I love .40 cal. and try to shoot it exclusively, unless I practice with my MK 9. The wife, on the other hand is like you........she likes her SP 101, and shoots it better than thou............you can't get much better than a K version of Kahr. Actually, I started shooting in the basement with my father when I was 8, so, technically, I've been shooting for over 50+ years. It doesn't mean I know squat You should make yourself more known in the future. We can always use another opinion........................................... .....

Be sure to check whether you have the "new style" or old style sights, so you get the right ones. There is a diagram showing it here: http://www.kahr.com/sights/kahr-new-...ium-sights.asp

I tried the Big Dots and couldn't get used to the low-vee rear sight. I tried a two-dot Trijicon rear with a Big Dot front sight, but that didn't really work. I sold my stainless P40 (Mag-na-ported) with that combo after I put the low-vee rear back on it. My new Black P40 has the standard 3-dot night sights by Trijicon.

With defensive sights on semi-autos you get a fat front sight and usually a double action trigger so it's harder to do "target shooting" after being used to revolvers with a finer blade-type front sight and single action trigger, which were much easier to "target shoot". The trade off is easier acquisition of the front sight for defensive shooting... center of mass, not bullseyes... important when you're not shooting at paper, but something that might be shooting back at you.

Can you or someone recommend where the best place to get the Big Dots sights for my K40 would be?
Also I really hate to send out my slide but think that its best to have a professional fit them. By no means am I a novice with using tools but not sure on how complex it is to install.

Sometimes Kahr sights can be just a bugger to get out, they are really tight. I've done a couple but it was a challenge.

I'm looking into a Standard Dot XS sight with a 10-8 U notch rear sight for my C Bob. I don't know if they even have anything for a Kahr but it looks like a good set up.

I have the Big Dot and standard shallow V on my PM45, I love it. It's fast to get on and old eyes pick it up well.

This Meprolite sight is coming out for Kahrs. I played with some at SHOT and am intrigued. Glare on the lense can be an issue, but I might have to get one just to see if I like it. You know, kinda like Obamacare was...

I bought the BigDot sights for my new PM9 directly from XS and installed them myself. It was very easy, not complex at all. You need a very sturdy bench vise to hold the slide, a brass punch of the right size and most importantly Kano Kroil to loosen up the tight factory installed sights.

You might look at my recent post - which has pics of my new TruGlo TFX sights on my K9.

                        Bright both day and night.

                        Good luck!

Decided to go with the XS Big Dots. Best price I was able to find was at an outfit called Universal Mania for $72.82 which includes the shipping. Heck shipping should not cost more than 75 cents in a padded envelope.
Watched the install video on the XS site. All along i was figuring that the angle shoulders of the sight pad needed to be filed to fit the width of the dovetail. Never dawned on me that the bottom of the sight pad is what will need to be thinned out to fit the dovetail.

I was able to quickly punch out the existing sights using a brass punch. Now the wait for the new sights.

That sounds like a great price.

Have to chime in here on the shipping comment though. Shipping a 2 oz package in a padded envelope USPS first class costs $2.61. If you want that insured for loss, that is another couple of bucks. Labor, the label, the padded envelope come to nearly another buck. FYI.
