Can you over do it with Flitz ?

Talking with Kahr today about sight removal direection.
He confirmed that they press them in right to left..

We started talking and I told him that I hit the slide stop with a dremel with wool pad and Flitz...
He was like oooooo I didn't hear that... you can void your warranty by doing that...

Makes me think... I have now done the flitz / dremel wool pad cleanup of the slide stop pin bits twice now.

The question is then... can I be removing material with this and as such should I stop this practice?

The wool pad is pretty much black when done so I wonder if it may be taking a small bit of material off.

Would appreciate the more experienced folks here opinions?

Also... IF I should stop the flitz bit.... how do you get that last bit of crud off the slide stop groves? Flitz by hand? Tried brake cleaner with a toothbrush and that didn't completely get it all...

Now that I got her working well I don't want to screw up by overdoing anything.

#1 tell them nothing. what do they do when the work on a gun and send it back and in the work order state polish feed ramp and slide stop. IMO u ain't gonna fokk anything up with flitz. IMO u hurt nadda and more than likely enhanced the performance of the gun to.

Mind u to, that these are probably some of the same kahr people who have told kahr owners to clip off a quarter coil of the recoil spring or more,,, if they can't lock the slide back:israel:

Still think I will go easy on the dremel next time or just use the flitz with a cloth or toothbrush to get those last stuborn bits of carbon out.

Yeah ... forgot to add... later in the conversation he admitted that if I had continued slide stop issues that he would send me an "enhanced slide stop piin"... asked him what that was and he admitted that it would be polished just like I did.

He even admitted that I had done one of the steps that they would have done in house had I sent it in.

LoL....

but for 'normal' cleaning I think I have to come up with another way to get back to polshied look and put up the dremel...

Don't worry about polishers like Flitz, Brasso, mother's and the like. Yes they are abrasive, but you won't remove enough of anything to harm it. I do wonder why the constant polishing though, use a toothpick if you really are that bothered be the carbon.

Flitz isn't for cleaning it is for polishing. I polished most of the internals on my CM9. If I have problems with it and Kahr refused to work on it because of that, then that would be the last Kahr I would own.

If you have some crud buildup then use a stronger solvent (hoppe's no. 9 or a breakcleaner) and/or let it soak. I wouldn't pull out the flitz for cleaning.

I want that crap out of every crack and crevace so I KNOW it is clean.
Especially with the tight tolerances of the P380.

Don't even get me started on the breechblock... I can never get that thing perfectly clean

whe i BOUGHT MY pm9 i POLSHED THE OUTSIDE OF THE barrel to a mirror finish. I had the barrel then magna ported Now wafter any 100+ rounds of shooting I will have a dark area around the magna port, when cleaning it. Hopped doesnt touch it, so I have always just take some 600+grip auto paper and polished that area around the ports until it is again shinny as the reat of the barrel. Now these barrels have a very fine nickel plating on them and in over 32K rounds and problaby at least 250+ deep cleaning and polishing of this dark area with 600+ gri\t paper. that shine is perfect, nothing is gone. the nickel plating is still there. These are not pus-sy barrels, the finish of nickel is actually (they say) more non corrosive and durable than a standard steel barrel. so flitz or any of those things mentioned IMO is not gonna hurt jack sh-t. I would not use flitz for cleaning as it is a paste and it ain't gonna do what any liquid cleaner can do. I can say with out a doubt I can spray clean all of my kahrs with BrakeKleen and get every nook and cranny area and when done, it is as clean and dry as a popcorn fart. Propper relubing and reoiling is a must when one deep cleans, but again that is also common sense.

Some of these gun cleaners "claim" that when it cleans it then leaves a lubricating residue left on the metal. Sorry I just don't bu that sh-t, if it does do that then it certainly didn't throughly clean, but again if u use it and it works for you, who am I to argue that point. Nice thing about stainless guns is that you ca miss an area with lube or oil and it ain't gonna rust shut tomorrow either.

I never have read of anyone over cleaning his weapon and "ruining" it..

Flitz is for one time polishing. There is no reason to do the same gun or its parts twice. Any good cleaner should soak off the crud on your parts. Use a nylon toothbrush if necessary. If this is a trouble spot, you may need to switch ammo to something cleaner in a factory brass case. A dremel tool is not part of normal cleaning.

There could be a reason to do the same gun or gun part more than once. To make it shine more than one time would do.

Flitz its weird stuff. Take a look at it new, under a microscope, then used a little, then used a lot. Its a very sharp, yet self disintegrating abrasive. It seems the more you use whats all black and nasty on the rag, the finer it is, and the finer the surface finish (ie, mirror).

Flitz will take of material - sharp edges may be rounded, so do go easy with it.

I just went to the Flitz website where I learned they make a Flitz liquid polish. The site also says, "Not for use on electroplated finishes." I've had good luck with Flitz on my Kahr pistols but am a bit concerned about this warning.

Not for electroplated - because Flitz _is_ abrasive (no matter what they say...just look at it under 100x magnification). Electroplating is often VERY thin, and Flitz could cut through to the base metal.

I know the Kahr barrel is nickel plated. Is this the same as electroplated?

I think you'll find that the Kahr plating is rather "thick" compared to some decorative plating, but... the warning still applies. You got at it big time with Mr. Flitz, and you may have unplated sections of barrel.
