XS Big dots on PM9

I am loving my PM9, but I would like some night sights soon. I have an XS on my Ruger LCR.357 and it is great. I installed that one in about 10 minutes. I would like to ask about the difficulty of installing the PM9 sights myself.

A couple of things:
(1) Kahr wants about $65 to do the job. I can be 100% sure they will be on there, but the gun will be gone for awhile.

(2) My new PM9 has plastic sights (my older P9 has metal), so I am very confident they will be easy to remove.

Sould I try the install?

I won't argue ur point but I never knew any PM9 had plastic sights.

I wold let kahr do it, if theyt screw up the slide, they will take care of it. u can just send the slide to them also and save big bucks on postage

xs big dots are IMo awesome on my PM9 and P380.

Would you please post photos (close ups, if possible) of your PM9's plastic sights?
I'm sure this will be of interest to folks here and very much appreciated.

Well don't I look foolish. :40: The sights are metal, but really dark and shiny. The rear has a lot of paint/powder coat on it, so it seemed plastic when using my thumbnail scratch test.

Sorry for the fuss. I will be having Kahr do the sights when I get them.

That's a great relief to a lot of people, I'd never heard of plastic on a PM either.

I think it's a wise choice to send it in, slide only. Usually you'll have it back in about a week, don't quote me on that but that's the norm I'm told.

They can be incredibly tight sometimes. I did my own PM45 and was blessed that it wasn't too awful bad but I've heard some real horror stories too.

if u arenot a handy person with guns and have no sight pusher and maybe the other tools needed to do it properly, Pay te extra ad let pro's do it for u. It is a one time cosrt , so look at it that way.. U will like the big dots though, especially for up close fast target acquisition. and if ur eyes are alittle poorlike mine that big dot does grab ur eyeballs some to.

I always let a gunsmith do sights for me. I have one who charges $25 and he did my CM9, and my FFL does it free if you buy the gun and sights from them. Both have been quality work.

Be nice to those guys. That's a bargain! I installed them myself on a PM40. It took me more than an hour, probably because I was so careful. Turned out well.

But, if your guys were nearby, I would have visited one of them just to reduce the worrying.

you can send your slide in a USPS mailer box for $9-10, but Kahr is going to ship it back by UPS for $25 extra, unless they changed their policy.

The cost of shipping may make the difference in the cost of a local gunsmith. At least my guy would stand behind it without any hassle or shipping back.

PS: Just checked and my LGS will sell & install the big dots for $150.

be sure and ask any local smitty questions before u turn the gun over to him. like what if he dings up the slide??? Does he have a sight pusher to get the orininal sights off the gun. Trust but verify. I have no doubt if kahr or xs sight people do itk, i8f they fokk it up. they will indeed stand behind it. A local smitty should be able to save u some bucks but ask urself "DO U FEEL LUCKY". Just sayin.

I would photo the enbtire gun before giving it to any smitty or even kahr or xs. remember pictures don't lie, but liars do...

Good advice! Admittedly, I am so not a gunsmith, but doing it myself convinced me there are many opportunities for things to go wrong while installing night sights. My installation did not, but I was worried.

ur ri9ght I read a few years back on another fourm where a gu tried to do it himself kand actually cracked his slide. I never wanted to buy7 a sight pusher either but after banging the fokk out of good sights, I jmade the plunge, best bucks I ever spent. I don't use it much anymore BUT I'VE GOT IT.

We use dto have some good ol time smitty around y area, guys who have done gun work for 30 years, I trusted them, but some of these new guys who just hang a shingle outside on the tree, make me nervous, expecially when u see that maybe he is living in a shack worse than his smitty garage etc, and u now want to intrust him with your 1 grand gun. Not me, I will pay alittle more , wait alittle longer.. Just sayin. Do ur homework before and then u will make the right decision.

I also send all of my guns to get worked on, especially when installing sights. I'm adding the new Trijicons on my PM9 but will be sending it to James at XD-HS2000.com. He does a great job charges less than KAHR. I have the big dot on my 40 and like it from a HD perspective and close range. However, for target I like the Trijicons better IMHO
