Used KAHR P9. Looks pretty dirty, finish almost gray in color

I've owned a couple KAHR's over the years, I'm not new to them by any means and while I was out last week, I found a deal on a used KAHR P9.

$350.00 dollars for a used P9 with two magazines and the original box.

The gun wasn't taken very good care of. The slide was dirty gray in color, the barrel looks like raw unfinished gray stainless.

The rifling in the barrel looks GOOD though so I don't think the round count is too high. The frame looks good too. It just looks like the pistol was carried to hell and back and not cleaned too often.

I figure worst case, I pay $100 dollars and have the barrel and slide Cerakoted flat black and call it good. I'll have a good cheap compact carry gun that cost less then some other lower end pistols. Can't really ***** too much I guess.

Other then glass beading, are there any other says to clean up stainless? Should I be concerned with the raw like look to the barrel? It almost looks like the barrel was plated with something and it all came off... The barrel looks worse then the slide.

OHHHH! and I have a question about some dots on the bottom side of the slide. I remember that a dot in the bottom of the slide means it's a newer style KAHR pistol, newer dove tails. I have two on this one though. One normal one that I would expect to see and then another bigger one that looks like it was put in with a press or a punch. What does this mean?

Sounds like the slide and barrel were beadblasted or something, or maybe they tried to blue it or darken it up. Odd...

forget about whether one dot or two. u have the newer slide which takes the standard dovetail sights. MY PM( has two dimples, why that is, I don't know nor do I really care.

\U outta be able to take sopme flitz or some polishing compopund and a dremel with a cotton polishing cone and just shine thge heh out of ur P9 barrel. It is nickel coated inside and out and it will polish up perfectr. Be sure to give the feed ramp and inside the chamber a good polishing for reliability purposes. Other than that u can actually leave the outside of the barrel alone with no harm..

Many kahr barrels come factory with a dull ass finish on the outside of the barrel over the nickel plating, why kahr puts that crap on that barrel I don't know, but it wears off real fast w3here ever there is metal to barrel contact, so if urs looks like it is all dull, then mayb e it has not been shot much at all either. Nice gun the P9 andIO u can't shoot out a kahr, so clean i tup good, review the kahr lube chart and the propper prepping thread on the kahr tech se ction and u will be good to go.. If it looks like sh!t on the outside as u describe then I woulde sure suggest a complete take down of the slide to get insode that striker channel at lerast one time to get all crapola out of there, and then after that u can just use that clean out hole on the bottom of ur slide up by the breech face. (Propper prepping thread discussses this to)

Something didn't look right about this P9... I kept thinking it looks more like a CW9 then my old P9 I sold but it's clearly marked P9.

So my new, used one is the one on top. everything I'm finding online says thats the OLD style one. However, it clearly has two dimples on the underside of the slide. I'm confused as to what I have here. Looking around the slide on this P9 looks like the slide from a KAHR K9 or K9 Elite. The slide release on this P9 also looks like the one featured on the K9's.

Also I was just comparing this P9 to my PM9, the barrel on my PM9 looks plated, the barrel on the P9 doesn't. It's very raw looking.

Hey for the price, if it shoots I really dont give a crap. I just want to know what I have here for sure!

I am leary of used CARS. They are sold off for a reason that you don't know. Polishing with Flitz works well with a cotton cloth. I have always used the liquid version.

no clue as to what and where ur reading on line about it being the old style. The diples kinda or should tellu what uhave. One dmple,two. or three means nadda. As I told youmy PM9 new style has 2 dimples. If I could take picutres ad post right, I would show u but I don't do that stuff well.. Not seeing the barrel, I can't give an opinion but like I tried to explain. kahr barrels do not come with a high gloss shinny finish on them. They are ALL nickel plated, ber they cw or P series. They normaly put some dull ass grayisbh finish over that plating for some reason, as it seems to wear off real fast anyways.

U have the new style slide, I have no doubt about that, but useem to wanna have the old style, or at least not believe what people are saying to u

Ur last sentence tells it all. BUT THE BASTARD GUN SHOOT IT LIKE U STOLE IT. The price is super, the gun IMO is correct.

Ur slide stop lever is the forged one also, and that comes on the P series standard. If the4 slide has a more shinny feature to it, consider that maybe the owner did some external polishing to it. Sopme people do that u know...Just sayin

Thomas, there IS an older "Blunt Nose" version of the slide but if it has the dimple(s) it is still the newer style dovetails. They went to the longer taper nose about 1.5 years ago on the 9mm P series pistols. I have no clue why. Many of us still prefer the blunt style. The "dimpled" slide with newer dovetail cuts was something that goes back to 2004.

As Jocko might say .... clean it up and shoot the Fokker! just sayin

The muzzle end of the slides, going from blunt to a more prominent bevel, is a fairly recent thing of a few years ago. The seven Kahrs I've owned all had a slightly different barrel look to them, from dull with visible machine marks, to smooth and shiny. Lots of variance there.

My advise; clean it, lube it, go shoot it, then report back how it goes. Enjoy it.

You have the new dovetail style; no question about it.
Your barrel is normal. I have a PM9 with the same dull barrel you have. I have another that shines, with a high polish.
To put this deal in perspective for you, my LGS has a P9, with 2 mags and box, for $525.
Clean it, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it. Then if you're not happy, I'll buy it from you, for what you paid.

I'm not bitching about the fact the guns newer or older one way or the other. I was just trying to confirm because I bought this knowing I was either going to glass bead the slide or send it out to be either Cerakoted or ROBAR NP3'ed.

The sights are going to have to come off to do either of those options so I might as well get a set of Night Sights while I'm doing it.

Also, I wanted to order a new spring set so I can rebuild the frame while its taken apart.

Then I figured I'd put a few hundred rounds threw it and call it a good cheap backup or summer gun.

I'd never seen a P series with a blunt front end in person, I'd only seen K9's like this so I wasn't sure.

OK back with one more question. Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to have the barrel glass beaded? I know it's supposedly nickle plated so I wasn't sure if glass media might strip that or cause it to flake.

As I said, my barrel looks like gray raw stainless, no shine, it's not even silver colored anymore.

I just spoke to the guys at Custom Creationz, a local well known firearms refinisher that does AMAZING work! Anyway he said he can glass bead the slide for $55.00 and the barrel for $15.00 with fine glass media and make it look brand new.

Price includes removal of the sights and reinstalling them. Might be a good time to get night sights!

OR for $30.00 dollars more I can have it Melonited too they said. HRMMM an all black Melonited KAHR P9. Interesting thought.

The more and more I look at this blunt noised KAHR P9 the more I think I prefer it to my newer one that had the angled slide I sold.

beading on the barrel will not last, like on the slide. I would leave it alone and jus tpolish it to a mirror shine which it will do.

IMO I certainly wouldnot order a sprig kit for the lwer grip section. NOT need what so ever. I wuld say not to mess with the triger pin removal. IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT. These springs don't wear out, Some might break which is very rare, but I would certainloy leave that trigger spring alone. Thereis no guaranteethat just because u buy a new spring ket, that they won't break either. Leave what is working alone.

I wouldsuggest if u so desireput in a new striker spring but I would leave the extractor side arera alone. Again why mess with what is working now. I don't like touse my PM9 as a model but my PM9 has over 32K rounds through it and the only thing I have ever replaced was the recoil springs and I installed from the gti gop the 5# wolffs striker spring. All else is orignal and never even had the extractor channel apart..

Nothing purtier than a nice black finish on the slide IMO. Just sayin. To my knowledge all P series kahrs are blunt nose...

Most of the Kahr line went to the more beveled nose a few years ago. I think around 2007 or so, (that's my best recollection).

This photo shows both ends on both steel and polymer guns. Note the T9 and TP9 are beveled whereas the K9 and older P9 are blunt.
