  • IDPA matches?

    Hello all,

I have a Kahr CW9 and I'm wanting to get into the IDPA action pistol matches at my local range. Im wondering if my gun is a good choice for these matches due to its long trigger pull? Have any of you out there used this model in these matches? I know its all about using what you carry, but I want to be able to compete too. Also, what are some recommendations from you guys about a good gun for these matches? Thanks.

Sounds like you could run it as a BUG

I've used my K9 a few times and it did fine. Depends what you want to get out of IDPA. If you want to win the game, use a Glock/XD/M&P like everyone else. If you want to practice using your EDC, use your EDC.

My only gun with more than 10-round capacity ("IDPA capacity") is a Bersa Thunder 9HC, so that's what I use most of the time.

Thanks guys. I want to compete to win, but at the same time get training and practice with my EDC. Also, my EDC largest mag is the 8+1 extended for the Kahr, so I guess I'll have to go buy a Glock and just run matches with each. Thanks for the replies.

Competition can be good training for EDC but know that some of the safety rules/practices/moves, that will become part of your routine/memory, could slow you down in a real gun fight/self defense situation.
Some may disagree, but I would also practice different situations alone, outside of the rules of competition.

I apologize if my post contains the same or similar information as someone who has posted before me.

I used to run my Glocks in IDPA.. just last month I ran the CM9 with 7 and 8 rounders.. result was ....embarrassing.. LOL. Folks are telling me to switch back to my Glocks..

But it is great for practice... especially I just don't run my Kahrs enough.

Next month I'll run my CW9 and see if I get better result..

Small, lightweight, DA trigger pull = very low scores in IDPA. NOT competitive. Helpful for trigger time, moving while shooting, and learning the limitations of your EDC.

IDPA is either a game played to score well with gaming equipment, or training for self defense using your self defense gun. Rarely is it both. At least some of the stages, like long range, high round counts or tiny accuracy, are set up for the game. Many fewer are set up to simulate real world SD.

I love the idea of IDPA. The only problem I have with the competition is people are winning with full size pistols like a Glock 34 that nobody carries as a concealed carry gun. I think there should be a limit to the guns to be used in a competition that simulates real life concealed carry. I respect the guys who go in using a snub nose revolver or a sub-compact pistol. I say do it. I would.

I'd read the rule book if you haven't, to know get familiar with them. They have a lot of requirements that must be followed.

If you have a 1911 in .45, or a 4 inch barreled revolver .38 or larger, there are a couple more classes you can compete in.

If you want the practice, I'd go ahead and use the CW9, to heck with the scores if you're just there to practice. I'd like to run my CW40 through sometime.

HY*NDAI is to cars, what Caracal, Hi-Point, and Jennings is to handguns. The cars may or may not run ok, but the corporation SUCKS.

When I shoot in IDPA and I'm trying to score well, I use a 1911 or a Sig P220ST depending on what division I want to shoot in that day.
However, many times I shoot the course a second time that day using my EDC (usually a S&W 940) just for the experience and to give me an appraisal of my skills with my EDC.

If you want to do well in IDPA SSP, get a Glock 34. For example I can run the classifier into the low 90's with my G34 from concealment, although not required, and run my CW9 in the 130's from concealment. That's the difference.
