  • CW9 Back Plate Removal

I bought a new cw9 a couple of months ago. (great pistol) No matter what I try I cannot get the back plate off of the slide. I owned a CM9 and know the procedure. I also know it can be difficult. With this CW, its like the plate is welded on. Won't budge. Any tips? (and yes, I have the striker spring compressed and am compressing the extractor spring as well)

I had to take a little jeweler screwdriver to mine the first time.

You probably already know that the hole to depress the extractor chain is smaller than it appears. I found I wasn't actually pushing enough.

When I did and did a careful gentle pry with the jeweler screwdriver it came right off.

Here are some pictures that may help from earlier discussions on this subject. The parts and how they fit together help explain why a strong flat Jeweler's screwdriver is needed to push the retaining pin all of the way down so that the back plate can be moved freely down. You may even have to use another to gently pry the top of the plate down to get it started, but that pin has to be down far enough.

In the last photo the back plate is just lying on top of the slide, not in the grooves.

        Excellent photos.

The plate may just be tight and require a second tiny screwdriver to pry down and off.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

6 monthws ago when taking the back plate off my K9 the plunger took off in space and I never found it. today while celaning in my man cave, damn there it was, just as good as the day it flew out of the slide.

          agree, excellent photos,

Finally got the plate off. I needed a third hand so I got a buddy to help. A thin screwdriver and a couple of gentle taps with a hammer got the plated started (and yes, the extractor plunger was compressed). I put a little grease in the back plate slots so I'm hoping maybe next time it might be a little easier.

                      I no expert but I had a CM9 with a similar issue.

I like you own other kahrs & they were not near as difficult to remove. I filed down the sides of the Slide back plate just enough to allow the part to fit in with hardly any force.

I test fit it with all the springs removed so there is no tension on the slide back plate.

I am not sure if the plates are out of speck or they wanted it to be that tight of a fit. I ordered another & the fit with it was the same. Seems to me you should not have to use a tool to tap it in & the way these were made you did. They would only slide down 3/4 of the way at best.

Anyone who thinks this is wrong or bad advice PLEASE fell free to Correct me. I would suggest you ask Kahr before you do what I did. Do as I say not as I do. LOL

I am comfortable with my change so I never called to confirm the way it should be.

The fit is tight and requires that the back plate move almost perfectly parallel to the grooves, else it binds... all while you're using a jeweler's screwdriver to hold down that rear pin just right! They are all that way, but I haven't heard of anyone "needing" to use a hammer before. I've had to restart removing or installing because of binding, but that's just the fit... tight. I certainly wouldn't remove any material!

Well I removed some & have shot right at 500 rnd without a problem.

My kahr p 380 does not need a screw driver or jewelers tool to pry it down & now the one on my cm9 does not ether. You only need something to push in the striker spring & spring for the ejector. Then you can use your finger to push the slide down & off.

Just to be clear there was no way to put the slide back plate in without hitting it with something wether that is something as light as metal punch. This is without any springs in the gun. Just test fitting. I scratched the hell out of the back trying get the original off so there was no way I was going to put it back the way it was.

Like I said call kahr & see what they say. Just wanted to say the part may be out of speck & it's worth a call to find out. I am not a gun smith & I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night. My gut tells me the part is not right but it could just be something I ate.
