  • Kahr frame and kydex molding

Sorry if I should be able to find this else where. Tried the search engine and called tech support " We don't have that information". I understand their position but has anyone used there Kahr polymer frame gun as a kydex holster mold? I have 4 Kahrs and really don't want to buy 4 mould guns if I don't have too. My Glocks take it fine. Im just concerned about the Kahr polymer and whether it will deform if hot @ 350 degree kydex is laid on it to mold a holster. Crimson trace says there laser guard polymer is fine but they have had electronics failure with using them to mold holsters so they are making a dummy for kydex molding. Any information from somebody hat has done it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I made my own Kydex holster but didn't use a temp controlled heating device on the gun side. I heated the kydex in the kitchen oven and press molded it to the unheated Kahr. No problems.
    cm9 and lovin it.

I did ghis too. No problem.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

The guy that made my holster for my CW40 used a heat gun on the Kydex then press molded it to my Kahr. No adverse effects.

All good points stated by others. I'll add that depending the level of detail you want in the molding of the holster, you may be able to use a slightly lower temperature. Let us know how it works out.

Ref Post #2, After I formed my oven heated Kytex around the gun with soft rubber and stiff pillows the kydex cooled. I then used my harbor freight heat gun and generally heated local areas and worked the kydex again around the gun to more define the shape with the rounded portion of a teaspoon. I did such a good job pushing in the trigger guard area that I again locally reheated that area and allowed relaxing that area. I think it's pretty easy to do really.

FWIW, it was pretty clear to me that the OP intends to lay heated and softened Kydex on the gun, as all of you are suggesting he does.

I learned from a local holster maker to put a layer of masking tape over the frame to protect it from heat. He thought the Kahr frames were more sensitive to heat. I don't know if thats true or not but i followed his advice and have had no issues.

Thanks Guys. I have a Blue light tactical home made vacuum press and have made other holsters just wasn't sure about the Kahr polymer. Thanks for the help. I did learn from crimson trace that you can't mold over the laser guard it will fry the electronics. Have already ordered there dummy laser and should have it next week.
                  Thanks for all the help.
