Spring kit

Hi,

Have a P380 and PM9 that haven't gotten a lot of use in the last 5 years (went on a 1911 craze, then M&P of all sizes and customization along with a little of this and that), if they're going to go back to primary carry, would you recommend changing out any/all of the springs in them?

If the magazines haven't been loaded fully for 5 years and the round counts aren't over 1500 or so, I probably wouldn't change anything. I usually keep an extra set of mag springs and recoil springs around though for when I do need them.

I respectfully counter what the esteemed Mr. Alfonse has provided.

Even if the magazines HAVE been loaded fully for five years, they're fine. Full stationary compression has been proven time and time again to not hurt magazine springs.

Not sure, or unsure about the 1500 round mark. I think my PM45's have done better at that point than before that point, and I have not been keeping count of rounds. Fifteen hundred rounds is thirty boxes of ammo. I think we're ok still at that point. Part of the break in of Kahr is the recoil system taking its "set" as far as spring tension goes, so I'll say that I'm tending to consider 1500 rounds still well within the mid-life of the recoil spring system.

Best thing - shoot it lots, see how it goes. See what ammo it likes, see what it doesn't like - and its bound to have favorites. Carry the ammo it likes.... or should I say "they" like.... especially that .380, which tends to be more finiky.

Clean, lube, and shoot them. See if you need a new recoil spring... if the slide doesn't go fully into battery after every shot... replace that spring. That's the only one that I've NEEDED to replace... when I had to help the slide into battery.

I'll bet they will be just fine. Clean, shoot to get reacquainted, clean once more and carry.

At least that's what I'd do. Kahrs are very hardy...

My K9 has just over 2500 rounds through it. A couple of weeks ago, I had a light primer strike. To correct this problem, I replaced all springs in the slide as well as the recoil spring. My MK40 is my EDC. It has about 1850 rounds through it. Based on my experience with the K9, I'm going to replace all of the slide springs plus the recoil spring in the MK40. In the future I will replace the springs after ever 1500 rounds in my EDC.

I seem to recall sometime in the past that Kahr recommend changing the springs about every 1000 rounds (or maybe 2000) for any Kahr you carry for defense purposes. Otherwise, you can shoot them until they fail and then replace the springs.

The recoil spring is mentioned for replacement, but not ALL of the springs... wasteful. I've only replaced others when they had problems... the slide lock springs that broke or were warped... and put an original striker spring back in the PM45 after it failed to ignite the same primer two or three times with the Wolff 5-lb spring. My G21 SF fired that round with no problem.

I do have spares for everything but the trigger and trigger bar springs.

My 21 cents. sprngs are very cheap to buy, and that means mag springs to, so when in doubt pitch the springs and start anew. I always buy from wolffs gunsprings the 5% extra strength mag springs, for I feel no differencein loading the mag and no doubt that extra strength might just last longer. Some guns indeed like the loosey goosey 45's the ilitary had can use mags loaded for years with no issues, but today with these smaller frames and faster actions on the slides, that mag spring can get alittle slow and cause a feed issue or failure to lock open. Its all about timing my friends and springs pay a very very imortannt part of TIING. So for this ol time, striker springs nd mag springs are two items that IMO if an issuye arrises, REPLACE. If u bend that slide lock spring, then if u ain't smart enough to tweek it back then replace it but IMO treat that area gently. It looks fragile but if you take care of that area u willnot have to replace that springhy.

Buy ur springs from wolffs in 3 pak and they are darn cheap and they will come iwth new standard striker spring. No doubt the 5# striker in time with alot of rounds can produce lite striker. I love that spring but I know the first lite striker, out thayt spring comes and a new 5# goes in and the issue is gone.. Error on the side of caution. Recoil springs for the captive models IMO ust replace the outter spring from wolffs and ur good to go. in the K series those recoil springs again are cheap in price to buy...
