How to load a PM9/MK9

Have been dropping a round in the open slide into the chamber,releasing the slide with the slide lock and inserting a full mag. Is that OK? Or...should I insert a loaded mag with the slide open, release the slide lock to load a round, then pull the mag and top it off?

Dropping a round directly into the chamber forces the extractor to ride over the lip once the slide goes into battery. This is harder on the extractor than loading from the mag.

Moreso, you run a higher risk of not getting the mechanism into battery, and also, in the case of out of spec ammo, driving the cartridge up into the rifling lead.

That method would not really be recommended with any pistol. If you continue to do so, you would probably end up with a damaged extractor before too long.

On my PM9, I like and now use the method mentioned on here by JodyH. He uses the 7 round magazine to chamber the first round, drops that mag and loads a full 6 round mag ready to go.

If you load like that with a 1911 the extractor will eventually break. Kahrs are a lot tougher than 1911's generally are - but I wouldn't be suprised to see some sort of wear problem develop on the tooth.

Check out the manual...it suggests that you load from the magazine, using the slide stop lever, drop the mag & top off the round, then your ready to go with a full compliment of rounds.

Have never loaded my Cbt Cdr that way. Only started it when I got the PM9 for CCW.

IMHO this technique should only be used in military guns designed to single feed each round when your magazine has been lost or destroyed. I'm referring to the M9.

The Kahr user manual is a great reference on how best to chamber the first round. The discussions here are a good place to see what can happen when the factory procedure is not followed.
