so i picked up a mk 9 today and took it apart and noticed the recoil spring pin assembly is plastic (black), my cm9 pin is ss but my mk9 pin is plastic? strange

That's the way they have always been. Don't know why.

Is not the MK9 recoil assembly totally captive, meaning no outter spring exchange, unlike the cm9 which is stainless with a replaceable outter recoil spring

never realy readof any complaints on the MK9 assembly. Polymer is not always a bad thing. Just sayin

I have a mk9 & mk40. I wish the guide rod was stainless but as stated earlier it has always been a captive system with plastic guide rod. It might be for #1 Weight. #2 Costs less than stainless. #3 There is flex in the plastic rod but I don't know if it is needed. #4. To aftermarket a $65 stainless rod. Whatever it is the RSA works fine the way it is.

well, after all the trash talkin about how much i love my cm9 better than my other kahrs i now feel stupid, the mk9 is obviously the best of my lot of 4 kahrs, the last one in line, the one i paid the most for, and the one i currently play with the most right now...
anyway, i can look past the polymer recoil pin... this gun is amazing... i stop playing with the 1911 all of a sudden...

I love my new MK40. It is now my EDC. I don't like the plastic guide rod but it works fine. Kahr sells SS guide rods but not the entire recoil spring assembly. I ordered a SS guide rod but apparently it was out of stock. I will reorder it in the near future. It won't make my gun any better but it will make me happier.

^^^ so then can you switch out the plastic pin on with the ss one you ordered without having to pay for anything more? ie you don't have to order the whole recoil assembly right?

When you order a SS guide rod for an MK9 the captive "cap" is a screw on piece. You can cut the plastic guide rod to get the old springs off. Use some blue locktite on the threads of the cap ... or you will likely wish you did. This is how I remember the assembly works at least.

I love my MK9 elite.... it took an extended break in, and one trip back to the mother ship ... but it is now perfect over hundreds of rounds. I have some new wood grips that I need to locate some screws for to dress it up. I've got my eyes open for an MK40 to match it.

Interesting enough ... If you buy the Wolff guide rod set up and springs, it converts the captive system to a Non captive system. I find that interesting because if I'm not mistaken, Wolff makes the springs for the Kahr original captive system.

Personally, mine works so well, I wouldn't change it.

I thought that would be one of the first things I would want to change when I got mine - but I like my MK9 so much the way it is that I would be afraid it would never feel the same again! It can stay as long as it holds up.

the purple locktite. It is the weakest of all thread sealants but worksw greaton small screws. Most gun stores sell the purple threadlocker.
