  • Front strap checkering

Has anyone ever had their MK's front strap checkered or know who does the work? I sometimes carry a 1911 and the front strap is checkered. Just curious.

I would think the cost would be more than the actual value gained, but they certainly add to the looks of the gun IMO, especxially on a MK or K kahr..

Over twenty years ago, I busted a 1/8 inch center drill. Center drills are tough stuff. What to do what to do.....

What I ended up doing was taking a piece of one inch stainless bar stock, and drilled it for a brass bushing. Then I put the center drill in the whirly-jig and put that on the surface grinder. Ground a nice 60 degreee nose on the center drill. Press fit that into the bushing, and I've been using it ever since for stippling.

I find a heavy stippling punch is the best to use.... and I've stippled at least twenty Government Model frames and a few CZ's and Ruger Mark II's with it.

                Wilson FAKE checkering job

Well, I got the Wilson fake checkering aluminum piece to try on my 1911 and decided to try to make it work on my MK9. I modified the item to fit using a round punch and I think it turned out pretty good. I have attached pics.

I've used those before and they work pretty well. Actually looks like it works better on the Kahr than on a 1911.

It cuts easily with scissors. I shortened one up for an officer model once and it worked fine too.

I do think a textured front strap, checkered, stippled or blasted is a huge plus.

That looks great! Won't slip/move will it?

It relies on the grip to hold it in place. Careful installation usually keeps it pretty solid.
It looks like with the Kahr with room to actually bend the material into the frame along with the grip it would be pretty solid.

Mine did move once in awhile, a grip screw comes loose or you don't have it evenly under both grips and it might move but even then it still works.

Certainly functional and a whole lot less than getting a front strap checkered.

I have never seen the Wilson Fake Checkering before and was not able to find it doing a internet search. Could you post a link where it can be purchased? I would like to try it on my K40.
