new CW9 owner

Picked up a used CW9. Guy said it has about 300 rounds down the pipe. It looks clean. Really like the gun. Going to the range tomorrow.

Have couple issues. First, the mag doesn't really eject from the gun. You press the release button and it will pop out like maybe 1/2", then you have to pull it out. It doesn't full eject the magazine like my other guns. I cleaned the crap out of it and put some oil on the mag to try and help it...no luck. Any ideas?

Second, I noticed the mag and the other mag I have when fully inserted have about a 1/8" gap between the bottom of the gun and the bottom plate of the mag. You can push the bottom of the mag up into the gun and you can feel it compress the spring more and sit flush with the bottom of the gun, but when you let go it comes back out to the 1/8" gap. Is that normal?

Also, noticed the stainless steel guide rod for sale on the kahrshop website. Any benefits to this? Mine has a lot of paint missing from being scratched from the spring. I'm going to sand and polish this one if there is no performance upgrade from the stainless steel one.

This issue is not a big deal and may be resolved by polishing the mag well with a dremel.

There are many firearms that the magazines do not fit flush, if it does not affect the fuctionality of it, then I would not worry about. Any who, my CW9 is not flush.

Is just cosmetic in IMOHO. Fuctionality is what you should be looking first and foremost.:86:

I wouldn't SAND anything like that. Removing metal is advancing the wear. That is a friction part and it won't look pretty no matter what you do. If shiny stuff that's hidden away is important to you, go for the stainless part. It's another one of those if it ain't broke, don't fix it deals. Just lightly oil the rod as indicated in the lubrication guide.

Just got back from the range. I had field stripped the gun and cleaned the crap out of it last night. Upon assembly I oiled everything with CLP. Everything went back together correctly and I put about 150 rounds through it today.

First 40 or so rounds, flawless. Then I had a lite strike. Ejected the round saw it was a light strike, ok it happens... About 20 rounds later had a jam. I'm about 99% sure I wasn't limp wristing it. Then about 20 rounds later had another lite strike, this time was another kind of ammo. Had one more jam up before I finished shooting for the day. This outing didn't instill confidence in the gun to me. I am going to completely strip the upper and see if it is gunked up to cause the lite strikes. We will see.

The mag doesn't fall free because the mag catch is hanging on it before it can get below it. I noticed the same thing with mine and if I hold the mag catch it firmly it will fall free. I have 2 mags that fall out and 1 that doesn't. It may be slight differences in mag dimentions. I don't think there is as much tension on the follower as there is normally in a 1911. I also notice there are drag marks on the outside of my mags.

I would clean and polish the chamber and try another brand of ammo before I gave up on your pistol. I have 270 or so rounds through my CW9 and no problems so far. The first brand of ammo I tried wasn't a problem but the accuracy wasn't what I expected. I tried a second brand and things improved. Finally I shot a third brand and found it worked the best. Sometimes you have to try with these things to see what runs the way you want it to.

and wtr your last post...light strike issues are somewhat common with Kahrs. WWB is an often offender and anything using Federal primers is usually not. It's a Kahr design "feature" that's causing the problem if it happens with any quality ammo. Long story short...firing pin length/protrusion is a critical dimension on these guns with a narrow QA bell curve. If the problem continues past 200 rounds (both of mine that exhibited this cleared up by or shortly after then) contact Kahr and insist it be fixed. I've heard that some customer reps press changing ammo. That's a semi-valid but unacceptable band-aid answer...don't fall for it.

well that sucks that it is a common problem. I don't want to carry a gun that may not fire when I need it. I'm going to go blow more cash on ammo and give more testing to check reliability. I completely stripped the upper tonight and cleaned every little piece and spring and it looks totally like new now. Going to go back to the range this week and see what happens.

I have a CW9 and was so impressed with it I bought a CW40 for daily carry. Both have well over 1000 rounds through them and I have had no failures of any type with them. They are not ammo-type finiky. I lube with RemOil only - it is a very light oil and has Teflon in it. It doesn't gunk up the gun. When cleaning I blast out the striker channel with lots of RemOil. I hold the striker back and squirt through the breech face hole, then squirt through the hole that goes to the front bottom of ther striker channel (some say it's a clean-out hole; it may be a drain hole or a gas-release hole in case of primer puncture). I then shake the slide to get the excess Remoil out, and finish the job.
That being said, your Kahr should be totally reliable. If not, get with Kahr on it. Note that complaints about any model of gun will appear to be common problems when what you're reading is from just a small sampling of owners. You don't hear from most of the happy owners. I'm over 50 years old and have owned and shot many different pistols. I say my Kahrs are perfect and I'd hate to see someone turned off to the brand.
