  • Are the new mags better?

About 6 years ago I, along with a lot of others, were having major problems with the mag release. Found my mag had dropped enough that I was carrying a single shot many times. Even sent to Kahr had had another mag release spring sent. After installing it I think the problem was a bit better but not gone. I just check my mag a hundred times a day.

Two years ago I decided to get a third magazine. The old mags had KAHR ingraved on the left side right above the baseplate. The new one has 9-7 over the word KAHR about an inch above the baseplate and were not near as shinny as the old ones. Now I've realized I've been carrying in the new mag two years now without a single incident of mag release. Now I'm almost afraid to use the two older mags in my P9. Anyone else notice this or am I the only one?

Just my opinion but I think back then kahrs had the polymer mag releaSE IN THEM WITH THE METALINSERT. sOME GAVE ISSUES. i NEVER DID THINK IT WAS THE MAGAZINE ITSELF AND EVIDENTELY KAHR DID NOT EITHER FOR THEY CHANGED TOTHE METAL MAG RELEASE AND THE ISSUES DROPPED BIG TIME.

Every one in awhile we hear about this and a new mag release4 seems to cure all. Why kahr has some mags stamped differently cold be vendor related, but I would not be afraid to use the oldmagazines. People are buying used K9s that are 10+ years old with the original mags in them, and the polymer kahrs bought by many are that old also.

But I never changed the mag release only the mag release spring. My mag release is still the same polymer release that came with it. I have noticed it takes a little more "push" to release the new mag then it did the older ones. Not complaining at all. Just pleasantly surprised.

Compare your mags... is there any noticable differences?

I just got a newer CW9 yesterday, it has a new mag with the numbers stamped on it, my old ones don't... I'll have to dig them out and see...

FWIW, I haven't had any problems with my older CW9 dropping mags unintentionally. Now, my P45 on the other hand...

Not a bit of difference Charlie except that the mag release/or hold hole in the mag seems a little larger on the newer one. I'm sure any difference, other then the caliber - round ct stamp above KAHR, is measured in 1000th of an inch. I just know that the new one stays put a whole lot better. Now the older two are for the range and the new one is for carry. I quess I need another new one or two.

I have to agree with Jocko . . . the issue is usually the magazine catch.

I have two PM40's. One developed a cracked frame that was replaced in April of this year. That gun consistently drops the magazine on the first shot with higher recoil ammo. Namby pamby ammo is just fine, but that's not what most of us carry.

Anyway . . . looking down from the top of the gun, the ledge on the catch that drops mags is easily a third less wide than the catch in my older, trouble free gun. To me that seem like a surprising part size variance.

Joe Mayo at Kahr has "entered an order for a replacement" catch, but in his email he does not sound convinced that's the problem.
It would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

kahr and ask for Jay or eion and explain u hve to old style polymer catch and it isnot holing ur mags good at all. I would think they might even send u the new style which fits right in .

I never had one issue with my old style polymer catch ever, course I also do not slam magts in either, but when they made the change to the all steel version I ordered one and it has wokredjust a good . Just sayin

I'm having the same problem with mags dropping in my CW9.
Kahr is sending a new mag catch and spring and I'll report back when I test her out.

Good for you! I'm guessing that you called, rather than sending an email?

Do you remember who answered the call?

Earlier this week (after dropping mags while shooting over the weekend), I sent an email to the general Kahr CS mail address. Reluctantly, after several emails, Joe Mayo has finally agreed to send a catch . . . no spring.

If you telephoned to get your more responsive service, I think maybe I should stop suggesting that people send emails and just recommend calling.

Thanks in advance for your input.

I sent an Email on Mon morning and waited a day for them to respond.
When I didn't get a response I called and got right through to Ian.
He was very helpful and said I could send the gun in (under warranty) or try the new spring and mag catch first. I'll try replacing those and if I'm still having the same prob I'll just send it in.

Thanks jocko and all others who have chimed in. I will call about a metal release. However, I've had zero issues with the old polymer release mated with the new mag. I don't know if they will call it "under warrentee" since I've been keeping company this thing since 2002.

u can always decline if they try to charge u, but I doubt if they will. and if the pol;ymer catch is workng OK then IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT. Nice thing about ur situtation is u can try the new catch and if it is not better u know you have a perfect back up catch.I wantto think the metal catch will work for allur magazines..

Living in Louisiana, you might want to just keep the plastic catch. They do not rust as readily as the all metal version.

I've been meaning to contact Kahr because my P9 Covert ocassionally releases the mag while pocket carrying in a pocket holster. I appreciate this reminder.

That's how I feel. If I have 3 mags I would like to think I had 3 "carry" mags.
