Seriously considering Kahr P9 for carry ?

A couple of questions before i get my new gun !
I want Night sights and thinking of finding a P9 with NS already on the gun . Anybody have knowledge of the Factory Might sights GTG or not ?

Next I was tempted to get a P9 with the black slide instead orf the stock Satin .
Last question some of the local Gunshop dealers have pointed out I would have reliabillity issues with a Kahr till I get 500 rounds fired to break it in !

Is that true ?

Hey Mike, I have a P9 for sale with factory night sights already on it for sale. I put just over 200 flawless rounds through it. The only reason I'm selling it is because I have (and carry) a K9. The one I have has the stainless slide though.

The factory tells you to put 200 rounds down range for break in, this gun has already had that. As far as reliability issues, there is always the possibility for it to not being reliable, however there are other factors that can contribute to it (operator error, ammunition, dirty gun). I currently own 5 Kahr's and have never had any issues with mine.

Don't believe anybody that tells you Kahr's might have reliability issues. Kahr firearms are just as reliable as any firearm on the market today. I own two Kahr's, a CW40 and K40 and have fired hundreds of rounds through them and never had an issue since round one. If you insist on buying a 9mm then by all means get a P9, you will not be disappointed.

Welcome to the forum. I picked up a used black P9 with nightsights a few years ago myself. It really does make for a nice lightweight, compact CCW. It carries a bit easier than a K9 but that's a personal choice as neither gun is bothersome if in a good holster. My used P9 has been very reliable, shooting mostly NATO rounds for practice.

Buying the gun with nightsights already installed is the way to go. I put fresh sights on this one and had a hard time doing it. Kahr sights are on tight. As you can see, I added an aftermarket grip sleeve to make it fit me better. Well spent $8 IMHO.

My P9 has been my primary CCW for years, nary a single problem w/ it. Even during the 200 round break-in it was flawless. I agree w/ the other response that a Kahr is just as reliable as most anything else out there. There are a couple of things that do not make it QUITE the same (and I mean behavior and use, not reliability) as anything else out there, but the purpose of a Kahr is not the same as anything else out there either. The Kahr product line has been built with one primary focus, CCW, period. If those are not (and they shouldn't be) an issue for you, then a Kahr is probably the best choice out there for a reliable CCW pistol. You won't find anything more comfortable to shoot and more comfortable to carry, no way, no how.

The two things (IMO) that make it a bit of adjustment from any other firearm are 1) the _initial_ inability to release the slide or rack the slide like many are practiced in doing w/ other weapons and 2) the relative stiffness of seating a mag completely.

On point 1. As many will tell you, releasing the Kahr slide using the slide stop/release works best during break-in. I have never ever had a problem w/ chambering a round using that method. Rounds tend to nose-dive and not feed otherwise. After a good break-in period, you can usually transition to hand releasing the slide on most models. I found that never really worked w/ my PM9, but it works w/ my P9 just find and is starting to work w/ my TP9 as I get it more broken in. My point though is that for a CCW pistol, you should never need to do anything else when reliability is the question/concern. It's not meant to be a range gun, it's meant to be carried, so no big deal. If you have to re-load your Kahr in the thick of it, you have BIGGER problems. At the range, this particular issue is just an annoyance until you remember to use the slide release instead of hand releasing.

Second, mag seating. Again, my only comment there is that it just takes an adjustment to get used to pushing that mag into place. But again, if you end up needing to reload a Kahr in a stressful situation, there are bigger issues at play and statistically speaking, never gonna happen (not that you shouldn't be practiced and prepared to do so, just sayin).

There are a few shops near me where either the owner or the employees often carry Kahrs and speak well of them. With all the choices they have, it is more likely they wouldn't if they really had issues.

I have a CW9. It is a very well built gun that I trust and like so much that other Kahrs are in my future.

Gun guys often get partial to particular brands and have biases against others based on one or two bad apples.

I'm with Jocko... Go somewhere else.

Aeromat, a P9 would be a fantastic cc gun. I have a CW9 and a K9 that I picked up used a few weeks ago.
Both are great .
CW9 has about 1K rounds through it and K9 only a few hundred (from me).
I did have an issue with mags dropping during shooting on my CW9 and kahr sent me a new mag release and mag release spring no questions asked. I have a few hundred rounds since with no trouble.
I know Kahr gets a bad rap about reliability and I have very little experience with guns only getting into them a few years ago but at the IDPA match I shot this weekend a few Glocks ,1911's and some I couldn't see what they were keep jamming big time.
My K9 ran like a top.
Maybe they had ammo problems, maybe dirty guns or guns in need of some maintaince IDK.
Just goes to show you ALL guns can fail and give you trouble

I carry a CW9 every day but reputation or not, I DID run about 500 rounds through mine to make sure it was 100% reliable AND that I was at least fairly familiar with the motions of drawing, firing and reloading it. Every pistol is different, every factory turns out a few that have problems... the idea is to find the problems and address them before you have to draw your weapon in defense; it is, after all, a mechanical devise.

In contrast, I have a P45 that has given me some problems... not that it isn't a fine weapon, we just have to adjust a few things. And I'm not going to take a drink of the Kahr Hatoraid, either, and pile on...

In further contrast, I don't like Glocks... not that they are not fine weapons, also... I just don't like them.

...and I have a question... if Glocks are Perfection, how come they are on their, what... 4th Generation? I thought they were already Perfect?

Personally I want to put a few hundred rounds through any gun I planned on carrying just to familiarize myself to the gun and to check for reliability

Kahrs are fine firearms. A lot, if not most folks on this forum own more than one Kahr, which ought to tell you something. I presently own three Kahrs ( P380, PM9, PM45), and I have my list of others that I want to aquire. Kahrs were designed to be thin, light highly concealable CCW weapons that are comfortable to carry. If that's what you're looking for, then give it a go. I think you'll like it.
