On the surface, sub-compact pistols appear to be a perfect fit for our wives/girlfriends.

    But there's a problem.

To compensate for recoil, sub-compacts often have recoil springs that are stiffer than full-sized pistols. And because the slides are so short, it is more difficult to get a strong grip on them. In the end, you have a pistol that many women (and men) cannot operate safely, because they can't work the action.

Anyone who has been here a while has seen countless threads on the subject. So, when Jocko advises a prospective buyer to ensure their wife/girlfriend can rack the slide of their selected pistol, before buying, he's only trying to help. And, he knows what he's talking about.

Many have made the mistake of buying a pistol their wives aren't happy with.

Some of us have used this as a way of acquiring sub-compacts we want for ourselves. Shhhhh.....don't tell her.
always said IMO the best gun for a woman is a wheel gun, WHY??

! she can actually unload the gun with total ease

2, she can actually6 load the gun with total east

3, she can't jam the fokker

    4. no safety to think about

5 kids around, so so easy to unload and put the bullets somewhere else

    6. she can load the bullets in backwards

7, she probably won't shoot it as good as a semi though

    8. lots of good defense and hoe safety rounds available for some of the wheel guns

9 If she feels good about the gun, she will carry it, if she is neverous about doing all of theabove with a semi and cannot do it properly, she will not carry it.

10 women are build differently than us--NO SH!T.

11 WOMEN ARE SMARTER THAN US MEN, SO DON'T TRY TO THINK FOR THEM AS U WILL ONLY FOKK THINGS UP

12 The abouve fits 90% of women, so there are exceptions to the rule

Or maybe he wants to carry a gun with purdy roses on it when his GF can't handle it, Who are we to judge?

My wife actually handled and racked a P380 really well. Shot it ok too for a newb. I nearly bought her one but I ran into a deal on 2 9mm Shields that same day and grabbed them. She wanted to carry one of them and I had her take 2 shooting classes. I told her to shoot everything she could get her hands on in case she liked somthing better. After the 2nd class she no longer wanted a P380, she liked the Shield, but was in love with an XDM 4.5" 9. So I got her one and she luggs that big thing everywhere with her. Surprised me. I still think she'll gravitate towards a 2nd smaller pistol in the future, but I'll let her pick it out. I did pick up a used P380 for myself a while ago, needs a new set of springs, and she laughed at it when I showed it to her

So maybe jocko's tone wasn't as condescending as I thought. But I am not buying her a gun blindly. She has handled a micro 380 already, I just dont like the quality of her current gun. And yes it has more kick than some guns, but it's a heck of a lot softer than others, and I can put an extended mag which will make the recoil at least a little more manageable. I was thinkin the ruger lcr 22 WMR, but I hate to be that far on the small end of the spectrum, plus it's larger than some of the micro 380s. If size wasn't an obstacle I'd recommend a larger framed gun, but the smaller it is, the more carry options she has.

As was stated earlier, if you haven't handled a Kahr the slides are much harder to rack than most others. My wife cannot chamber a round in mine. I've handled several other " micro 380's" and none as stiff as a Kahr. Just be sure before you pay. If it didn't have roses on it I'd say just buy it and hope she hates it lol.
