We make it a policy to kill all the rcoons, ground hogs, skunks and snakes around our farm. I used to carry a 380 but found that it took 3 to several shots to get the job done on a racoon or ground hog. They just sit and look at you even with head shots. Usually with a 40 and it is a one shot deal.

I am not talking about shooting phone books but living animals. It is an eye opening experience.

A 380 is better than throwing rocks but not much more so.

What ammo were you using and what length barrel? The newer .380 ammo seems so much better than FMJ's.

The XTP seems to be the best performing 380 HP out there.

Handloads kwh, SWC 105 grain 900-950 fps. From a LCP. The 40 is a 180 gr TC at about the same velocity. My Kahr PM40 is about the same size as a 380.

My wife and I both agreed that the 380 just isn't enough to stop a 200 pounder. Maybe a 40 isn't either, she carries a 9mm with the same swc bullet and 2grains more powder than the 380.

We haven't sold the LC's they run great after 6 years and a couple of updates. Keep them for backup. Can't have too many guns.

When I got my PM 40 used I was looking for a 45 but the 40 is great.

                    Back OT.

Should you ever try the XTP in a short barrel , I think all of us would like some real world feedback on what is supposed to the the best projectile for the LCP. Maybe not on a skunk first, in case performance is not all it is cracked up to be. Groundhog should be informative. Thanks.

                          Hi KWH
I hate to use the excuse of my heritage (Scottish) but I can be frugal.

A hand cast 40 bullet stuffed in once shot brass is about 5-6 cents for me even in this day and age.

If a box of them (xtp bullets) ends up in my possession either in 9 or 10 mm I will be sure to think of your comments.

I am also Scots that is is why I volunteered you for the field test. I do however have in my possession a small supply of Precision One XTP ammo in .380 caliber, and could donate some to the groundhog cause. I do not know about shipping ammo by UPS however, one individual to another. I am in N.C. With the new CW380 there has been a lot of discussion here of effectiveness of solid vs. HP's in short barrels. Groundhog should provide the answer since his services are no longer needed after the late Spring /long Winter we all are having.

I plan in documenting a test with the XTP in 380 in the future. However it will be with an inanimate object, perhaps several water jugs?
