  • Best defense ammo for CW9

Want to the range yesterday to continue to try and get used to my CW9. I shot some Ranger NATO, HST +P, Gold Dot +P. Did ok but still shooting left. In my range ammo box, I found some Winchester Ranger 147 grain SXT none +P. The 147 grain ammo seemed to shoot to point of aim and I liked the recoil etc. I know everyone shoots whatever they can handle. Just wondering what other CW9 shooters have found works well that is not +P. This gun is a backup only for my duty Sig.

    Thanks guys as always

Search YouTube for "Ammo Quest 9mm". They are working their way through some EXTENSIVE tests. I picked up some 124gr Federal HST (also non +P) the other day (always liked the .45 version), but Hornady Critical Defense also had good results in their testing.

blah, blah, tactical, zombie killer, one shot stopper, blah, blah, FBI tests, yadda, yadda. what's cheap and available that you can practice with? last ammo I bought for practice and carry was some Fiocchi 158gr. subsonic that was on sale at Midwayusa. nice shooting ammo, low recoil, fast 2nd, 3rd shots. other ammo is PMC, Armscor, whatever is on sale. FMJ. sometimes pick up 147gr. Winchester flat nose, that's a nice shooter. practice.

My 9mm's get a lot of 124gr Hydra Shoks. I ran into a good deal on them and bought several boxes. They seem to have a solid reputation. When those are gone, I'll just have to see what I can get for a reasonable price. I'd like to try the Ranger SXT out, and the Federal HST. WWB from Walmart, or Remington UMC HP is my standard practice ammo. They both have 100 round boxes. I think the UMC are a dollar more, but can double in a pinch as SD ammo.

I Practice with what ever is on sale. Carry Federal HST. Hornady Critical Defense would be my 2nd choice. If you like Win. Rangers STX best, I do not see a problem at all using them. IMHO.

Thanks All anyone run XS Big Dots on their CW? I have a heck of a time picking up that small white front sight. Thinking of sending in the slide for Big Dots and shoot the crap out of it with none +Ps We have to qualify with our BUG out to 75 feet.

I did find 115 grain Hi Shock Federals at ATG for a good price. Great for practice but not sure a reliable defense round. thanks again guys always learn something here. In a station full of XDSs, Shields and 26s , I stand alone carrying a Kahr.........

I think u answered ur own qustin. if that 147 grain ammo shoots POA and u like it and it is TOTALLY RELIABLE just stick with it. Why experiment and gtet all confused. Reliability has to be #1, after that IMO most all rounds will more than do the job if needed.....
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

I'll second that. Over 200 rnds without any problems. Great defensive ammo especially with the Kahr pistols.

For carry, I load what goes bang every single time with zero problems (Hornady Critical Duty). You'll have to find out what your pistol likes best.
For the range, any factory reload that is cheap will do. Use www.gunbot.net or ammoseek.com .
As for shooting left still, I'd bet your trigger finger is still not familiar with the Kahr trigger, especially since you're used to shooting a Sig.

Look at the Dawson tritium front sight. Putting one on my E9 didn't go as smoothly as I expected. I'd see if they will mount it for you, unless you have experience staking sights. Nice sight.
