  • What causes premature slide lock-back?

While shooting WWB today in the CW380 I had one premature slide lock-back. What causes this? I've had it once or twice before...can't
pin it to any particular ammo. Just hit the slide release and finished out
    the mag.

The nose of the bullet striking the inside of the slide stop as it moves upward in the magazine.

Also, an improperly adjusted slide stop spring or a limp wrist can cause it.

Has anyone encountered a problem with premature ejectulation? That's when the mag falls out before it's empty.

If the round doesn't eject in four hours, call your doctor.

Are you sure its not grip related, sometimes people engage it on accident while firing?

For me it was always my thumb hitting the lever....easy enough to fix.

In my limited experience the #1 cause is the right thumb touching the slide stop on recoil. #2 is the bullet nose touching the slide stop, especially with reloads.

Premature magazine drop is usually that floppy thumb as well. My thumbs up target shooter grip has caused me a lot of issues.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't "limp wristing" as I use a firm two hand hold (you have to with
a CW380), but it may well have been my thumb on the slide release. I'll pay close attention the next shooting session.

If, big if, it happens again and is not my thumb, can the tip of the slide release be honed down some to avoid bullets touching it? It looks to me like each bullet in the mag presses lightly against the tip of the slide release; assume its made that way and meant to be?

You can remove a little metal from the slide stop, but only enough to gain minimal clearance. Too, much and the gun won't lock back after the last round is fired.

Thanks Muggsy, good to know. Will do a lot more shooting with diff types of ammo before I take any significant amount off. I did pull it out and polish it a bit on the tip that sticks down. Fired 4-5 mags WWB thru it with no issues. Might have been simply my thumb. Hopefully.

Just finished shooting a box of ammo, mostly WWB except for 6 Remington HP's and 6 Golden Sabre's. One GS failed to go into battery, and I had one premature lockback with the WWB. My thumb was locked down and no where near the slide stop. Have now taken a small amount off the stop and will see if that helps when I shoot again. Fortunately, I can shoot in my yard so I can plink anytime the wx is nice.

Spent most of this short session doing rapid fire and am not much impressed with my accuracy. I did some point and shoot and on others tried to aim. Seemed the P&S was
about as good (or bad) as aiming. Gotta try this with my LC9s; feel pretty sure accuracy will be better with it.

Since I'm rambling on, I'd like to ask if anyone has used any MFS Hungarian 380? I got a box of it, along with 11 boxes of WWB and a few of the HP'S in a trade for some of my
                          Makarov ammo.

For carry ammo, try a Hornady bullet (Critical Duty or Critical Defense) which is very conical compared to other manufacturers. I had to sand off some of the slide stop on two CW40s, which fixed it. Have had no problems with Hornady factory rounds.
