They may recommend the way they do in order to evenly center the small spring inside the larger. If one finished coil seats inside the other larger finished coil, it's pretty well centered, more so that the open coil inside the larger finished coil. I imagine that centering would be important to avoid the spring clashing upon compression.
It is mildly annoying when reinstalling that guide rod to have the open spring peak out the hole before the guide rod pushes in, but not a show stopper. I usually keep the open tip aligned at the same point and aim them low to keep them from jutting out the hole as I install the guide rod.
But I'm open to what works, so experimentation is fine by me.
