CW-40 Recoil - just too much for most???

Got a buddy with gun itch. He owns an HK USP 40 and I recommended a Kahr CW 40 as a low cost carry gun. I have held one and the grip is PERFECT. I just let him shoot my PM9 and he loved it, so he had Kahr in mind. Then he went to the "Nation's" gun show in Chantilly, and surfed the floor. He found CW 40s at ONE dealer for $399 - I told him that's a good price. Before he could buy it a dealer talked him out of it, becuase he said he got rid of his because it kicked so bad. Also, my buddy noted that the CW 40s are cheaper than the 9s by 7-10%... So, he is looking at other things.

Is the kick THAT bad? My PM9 with +P is great...

It's a jolt, I think it's more muzzle flip than recoil so much. Many get along with them just fine here and love them. I have the K40 all steel and it bucks some. It's a great but hot little round in such a small package.
As mentioned many get along just fine with them. To me and note it's just my own opinion it's too much muzzle flip for a CC gun. I prefer my PM45 to my all steel K40. Just more manageable to me.
In a larger gun I love the 40 but still pefer 45, just me. I'd see if he could find a rental gun he could try if at all possible, he might just love the 40 to pieces and make a lieing laughing stock out of me. Ooh, that already happened.

The 40 is a snappier round to shoot. I have a CW9 and find it very easy to shoot and keep on target for multiple shots. Something that I think is a very important fact in a CCW pistol

I had my man card revoked 16 years ago after a bad encounter with a falling wall. Ruined me physically forever but fortunately my brain was so small that it was not harmed in anyway. Course it might have been defective since birth too so who would notice?
I had a 45-70 and a 7mm barrel for my contenders long long ago, now that's manly recoil. Had to replace the grip screws every 10 shots or so or they would shear off and the frame would fly out of the handle on recoil. Exciting.
But I don't want to experience that during an encounter with a less than stellar citizen. Although with the muzzle flash I would no longer need a flashlight.

When I had my shop and was doing some custom gunsmithing and such, I had a guy want me to build a 45-70 over and under derringer. I almost did. Then I remembered that I would have to shoot the thing. I just couldn't figure out how to hold the thing under recoil. I declined, and ran into the guy a couple of years later, asked if he had found some one to build that cannon. He did, I asked if he had shot it, he did, gave a sheepish look too. I asked about that, he said twice. There has to be a way to hold a monster like that under recoil, but I can't see it.

I agree. It is a controlable handgun, with practice.

Try a heavier weight recoil spring to reduce recoil with the .40

I could see where some might have a problem with it, but if you plan to carry it, you should be at the range a fair amount. The more you shoot it, the better you'll be. I used to carry a Firestar m-40 and everyone that shot it said that it was a hand cannon. I didn't have a problem with it. The firestar had more wieght and was easier to shoot than the CW-40 (imho). Everyone has a comfort zone. You just have to find yours. A good friend of mine and I went shooting with the Firestar and he hated it. He is a very large man, and I just couldn't figure out why he disliked the .40cal so much. Then I found out that he had left his ear plugs at home and he thought that he would suck it up and be fine!!! Nothing like a short barrel and a solid round to ring your bell. Sorry for getting off topic.

and a very universally fitting grip.

There's no doubt that the 40 S&W is a bit more "flippy" and torques more
than the 9 or 45 but I really think most folks just make way too big a deal
about it. The CW40 especially is very controllable. Both my Glock 23's and HK USP Compact 40 tended to flip more at the muzzle.

the whole CW series are great guns and represent a true value.
I think they are the sleeper of the Kahr line.

I believe he upgraded to a PM45. Michael, correct me if I'm wrong. We got them about the same time on opposite corners of the country.
