  • Daughter prefers Makarov over CW9 where did I go wrong??

Bought my daughter a new CW9, she's 21 and wants to go into law enforcement.

Finally got to take her and it out to the range to try out, along with my CZ, a Makarov and my P40.

She didn't like the trigger pull on her CW9, too long she said.

Then she tried the cheapo Makarov and really liked it - even double action.

Here I thought I had raised her right. Evidently I went wrong somewhere . . .

With experience, comes wisdom - she'll figure it out, eventually.

Let her play with the toys, she'll learn.
Attitude: it takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile...and 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

Other than being heavy-for-size, whats wrong with the Mak? Cheap to buy, cheap to shoot and ultra-reliable.

Hell, our K-Series Kahrs are heavy for size.

Interestingly enough I guessed the answer before I read your post. Those of us that carried hammerless snubbies think we have died and gone to heaven shooting the light and long trigger pull on a KAHR. It is not for everyone. It is an acquired taste, once mastered it will improve one's shooting skills using almost any firearm.

I bet she likes it because of the fact it is heavier which would mean less "felt" recoil. Try a service pistol with some weight like a Sig P226 or the smaller P229 they also have beautiful dual action triggers. A LOT of law enforcement use them, so it would essentially prepare her on her LEO career

I bought a Feg PA-63 (so-called Hungarian Mak) this fall and did a spring job on it. It's only 21 ounces unloaded and feels much better in my hand than a CW9. Shoots great, very reliable.

I sold many Mak during the gun dealing days, never got one back, they were super guns. Every once in awhile I wouldget a Hungarian model even inthge same lot as the knock off versions. I kept one for years evenb. super little gun and the Hungarion one were just top quality in fit and finish to. What is not to really like about them.
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

I went through a Mak phase, had a really nice East German model that actually had a pretty good trigger on it. For whatever reason I never took to that gun. Recoil, hammerbite, crappy tiny sights... I don't recall the reason. However, she could do worse, but obviously she could do better. Who can count the variables that go into a person's choices and preferences. If she likes it, then isn't that what matters most?

...she's 21 and wants to go into law enforcement.
If that's the case, then she may want to start practicing with full size, double stack, duty guns. Whereas any practice is good, she won't carry a Makarov as a polce officer.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

Roger on that Jocko! I also sold a ton of maks back in the old days when I had my gun shop. They were an inexpensive alternative. and you are right, they never came back. Matter of fact, I was just talking to one of my old customers the other day. He still has (and carrys) his mak.

All that being said, I will take my PM9 over a mak any day. In my mind there is no comparison. I also believe that Thunder's daughter, with a little more experience, will move to the Kahr.

                          9 mm trumps 380 any day to..;

Not a lot of good defensive ammo for the Mak either. I had a CZ-82 a while back and never found anything that seemed likely to expand. I know .380 has some of the same issues, but a lot better manufacturer support in bullet types/cartridge loads. Of course 9mm is the clear winner over either as Jocko points out. Perhaps she needs an overview of the topic of expansion and JHP effectiveness.

Have her check out Tnoutdoors9 channel on YouTube. He's done some nice ammo tests.
