Added PM45 - Questions!

I picked up a PM45 a couple days ago and just shot the first 100 rounds through the never-been-fired beauty! I have a blister on my pinky from the cheese graters and 2 cuts in the middle of my forehead from brass hitting me. One actually hit my right eye, but I had my protection. The sum beotch kicks a bit...Dang!

I now have a PM45, 2 CM9s and a P380. Even with the battle scars, I am super happy to complete the Kahr concealed package. I do have a few questions for the forum professionals...

In the first 50 rounds, the mag did not seem to seat correctly and the round was not brough into battery. It only happened with the first mag and not the second, and it only happened when using the slide lock pin to release it. It probably happened about 5 times with the first round, and I could tell when the mag was not seated. What causes this? I assume it is a break-in issue, so not worried, but I am curious.

I used the sling shot method on the first round about 4 times and had no issues at all.

I have also heard that the forehead cuts will go away :7: as I get through the break in period. What causes this and why does it stop? The first time it happened, I got a big grin on my face , because I heard about it.

As the recoil spring unlimbers a bit, the forehead thing will quit.

Unseated... what happens is the mag is locked in place but the top round slips under the bar at the bottom of the breechface area. There is supposed to be a tiny bevel there, which will help the top round find its right place, which is ahead of, not under, the part of the slide that strips new rounds. Check that bevel (field strip to see it). It may need to be added, or slightly modified if the problem continues.

Are you loading the mag with the slide locked back? I'm wondering if you just don't have the mag quite all the way in position. Could be a mag release, a bur or something. It may get better and it may not.

Might also be lack of a bevel on the stripper bar not allowing the cartridge to move up, this would work fine in a sling shot as your pulling the slide back a bit more allowing it to move up. Basically the back of the cartridge is hitting the bottom of the slide even when open, this sometimes results in the slide running forward without picking up a round out of the mag.

I get the forehead hit usually only when my grip is less than business like. Get lazy or a little sloppy and I get a wake up call.

I was surprise to read your statement about it kicking so much, steer clear or the poly 40's, now those to me kick. I don't have an issue with the kick on my PM45.

Or you could just skip all this and go with what that wicked quick CJB said, he's on the money.

Thanks guys! You have already sent my non-technical brain running. Once I realized that it was not stripping, I was making sure the mag was seated. When I shoot the other Kahrs, a simple thumb press works great. The mag release on the PM45 only sets correctly with a good, hard push or a heel of the hand slam. My theory is that it is (maybe) just a bit harder to seat this one OR a bur on the mag release. Once I was aware of it, it did not happen.

Bawanna only mildly offended me by calling me a wuss who is limp wristing and can't take the recoil. I'm not recoil sensitive, but I think it was the grater biting into my skin. I'm grater sensitive for the first time. I usually don't have a pinky involved when shooting my Kahrs! For me, there are some days when I am more stable and shake less. This was an unstable and shaky day, because I was SO excited.

I will apply your theories to my next range visit to further sort out the issue. Again, I am in awe of the forum professionals on karttalk.com. By far, the best group of forum guys in the forum world.

For the record speaking of the party of the first part (me) to the party of the second part (you) I did not at anytime verbalize or even think in my head that your were a wuss or that your ever played a wuss on TV.

Likewise I also never inferred or insinuated that your grip was anything less than manly.

If the grater is sensitive to your girly man hands, I'd do the bicycle inner tube trick. Use the neighbor kids bike. Good grip but not painful. Or the wood burner stipple job to reduce the courseness.

For the record I did in fact in writing refer to your hands as girly man. I await my punishment and throw myself on the mercy of the bottom feeding judge who no doubt was a bottom feeding ambulance chaser in a previous life.

All seriousness aside, did you check for the aforementioned bevel.

Good pics in the tech section in the GB fixes for CW45 and other polymer guns or pistols or lead dispersers or some such thing. Very good stuff.

I think there's a market for this. I think T shirts would sell like nuclear missiles or at least maybe like T shirts with inappropriate suggestions on them.

I briefly touched on this theory when I had Mrs Bawanna embroider a bib for Justins baby girl. Had her write "Jocko Knows, Just DO IT."

I've not received any report from her to date but I'm sure she's not even writing yet, let alone keyboarding. Perhaps when she reaches school age writing will be a thing of the past?????

I went to GB's great, consolidated CW45 tech section. When I went down to check on my gun, I realized that I shot all the 45 ammo! Who runs out of ammo? I have over 1000 rounds of 9mm and 380, but for some reason they don't fit in the PM45 mags. I am headed to the beach for a vacation and will have the gun with me. My son and I will take some time to shoot if the sun is not shining.

I followed a link that put me watching a video of some guy shooting in the desert. Scary dude!

An almost invisible but effective solution for the cheese graters is a single strip of hockey tape on the back and another on the front of the grip. The tape I have is perfectly color matched to my polymer frame, stays on very well and it's hard to see it there. When pressed on, the grater can still be seen and felt, but all of the bite is removed. By carefully trimming the length of the strip and getting it lined up real strait, you can make a neat looking addition to your grip.
