  • Looking for advise with sighting issues with my CM9

I have been shooting my CM9 to get it broke in and for me to get used to the combat sights and I am having an issue. I always shoot low when I line up the dot right on top of the bar.I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on something I could do other than just aim high which I would like to avoid. I am used to the sights on my Glock and would consider changing the sights on my CM9 if need be. Maybe I will just get used to it over time?? I do not have this issue with other handguns that I shoot. Thanks for the advise. Otherwise I am very happy with the firearm

I put a set of three dot Meprolight night sites on one of my PM40's. It now shoots to point of aim with less conscious effort than the one that still has the standard "dot the i" sights.

Maybe that's because all my other guns have conventional three dot sights. Dunno. Just know that the new sights work better for me.

If you have a lot of experience with more conventional sights, you might be better served by replacements too. Otherwise, work on your trigger control and shoot a bunch of rounds and you will probably adjust. The human brain is a marvelous device that tends to compensate after enough experience.

    Best of luck!

Thanks for the advise I was thinking of changing mine to 3 dot also. The front sight is pinned in my CM9 and it looks like all the sights on Kahrs web site for sale are for the dovetail front sights. Would just changing my rear sight work or would I have to change them both? I am far from a gunsmith also. Is changing the sights best left to gunsmiths or is it something a novice can handle?

I changed my own, but this pistol is not the first one I have worked on. If there were someone nearby whom I felt I could trust, they would get the job.

Google installing sights on the internet and you will probable find some lessons with all the details. If you feel intimidated by the process . . . find someone local you trust or send the slide to Kahr or the sight vendor you choose.

Because the slide is NOT serial numbered, you can ship it cheaply and legally by US Mail, if you like. In my experience, the small, flat rate Priority Mail boxes are a good choice. You can track their progress via the USPS website.

On the other hand, just replacing the rear would certainly work too. Plain sights are not very expensive. If the experiment does not work for you, you can still send off the slide to an expert.

Let us know how it goes, please.

Thank you for the link, I did finally find it on Kahrs website and I think I may give that a try. I like the 3 dot better mostly because my other guns have it and I thought I should keep things as similiar as I can. I like having night sights also as the CM9 was bought for a carry gun. Any other suggestions or opinions are appreciated

Welcome to the forum, NEO Hunter.

I would let a gunsmith that knows what he's doing... with the proper equipment... install night sights. Those Tritium vials can get cracked with mishandling. I bought most of my Kahrs with night sights, but I had some installed on other pistols by experts... Novak for my Springfield Champion and a local custom gun works business installed the HD Trijicons I got off the Internet on my XD45.

With those dot and post sights, the point of aim that equals point of impact... POA=POI, should still be the top of the front sight post level with and centered between the rear "posts". Dotting the "i" is fine for quick point shooting, but you will probably have to adjust your point of aim to hit your desired point of impact.

I don't like dot and post sights and have only one pistol with those... the P40. If Trijicon would make the HD Night Sights for Kahrs, I would get those. Having those on my XD45 has me waiting and hoping for sights like those. Actually, I have two with dot and post now. I got a second P380 for my wife and I just got a regular-sighted one for her, but I prefer three dot sights... Tritium night sights for my defensive pistols.

With the sights on my PM 9, I have to put the middle dot ON the target, rather than just below it. With that in mind, it fire very exactly to POA.

NEO Hunter, how do you shoot the gun when you use the square edges of your sights?

I will try to use the square edges and let you know. I don't think I have tried that I pay more attention to the white line.

Yes, your eyes are better able to tell when straight lines are misaligned than when curves are. If you are able to see the straight edges of your sights, that's what you should always be using for best accuracy.
So many folks see the markings on their sights and think that is what they should always be using, and their accuracy can suffer. In low light or against a target that may be dark colored is when you use the markings on the sights. With a little practice your eyes will automatically make the transition between edges and markings when they need to.

Also, check with an empty gun and dry fire against a light background. Watch that front sight and make sure it is not dipping down when the trigger breaks. You are going from full sized pistols to one with a small grip and there is less to hold onto to counteract a forceful trigger squeeze.

You definitely want to be dotting the i meaning the dot on the front sight should be a little above the white bar not on it. When first using the Kahr sights my eye wanted to place the dot directly on top of the white bar and that makes you shoot low. Also, by concentrating on using the pad of my finger on the trigger and not knuckling it (my CM9 is small for my large hands) I no longer pull shots low. The Kahr combat sights are good for that purpose. Combat. They are not the best target shooting sights. They are quick to line up left to right but a little harder to get perfect vertically. The human body is longer than it is wide (for most people anyway) so this makes it a little easier to hit your target with these sights. Shooting a little low is still on target.
