115, 124 or 147 grain? Hollow point is a given. standard or +P?

    Hardware: cm9

What provides best balance of velocity, bullet mass, recoil, stopping power at 5 and 10 yards? Any brand preferences / data?

you'll probably get a variety of opinions here, and we all know what that means. but at 5 and 10 yards, my opinion, 147gr SD round.

I believe forestranger recently did some velocity testing on some defensive rounds with a CM9.

Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST's or Winchester Ranger-Talon rounds for me. 124 Grain Standard or +P in my Glock26. Good combo of speed & energy released into the target. Can buy all these in 50 round LE boxes at Ammo To Go. More you buy, the less S&H per box, so I usually order target rounds too.

I recently shot a box of Speer Gold Dot +P 124 Gr. immediately following 200 rounds of Blazer Brass (think it was 115 Gr.?). Anyway, I didn't find there to be any appreciable difference in perceived recoil, and my hands were pretty beat up at that point. Looking forward to trying the Short Barrel stuff for my carry ammo.

For those who want an inexpensive quality FMJ for range work that has recoil similar to SD ammo, I have found the S&B 115 gr FMJs to have similar kick to the GD +p 124 gr. I was pleasantly surprised, though I don't think I could shoot as many in a range session as I could WWB or Remington.
            Very interesting...

These have all been tested by DocGKR, posted on ar15 and m4c. He has said that for compact autos, they should all be fine. Pick one that is reliable in your gun and that you can actually purchase economically (that usually means 50rnd boxes of HST or Gold Dot). Keep in mind your accuracy with the gun is more important than the small differences between the individual rounds. My choice for my CM9 is the 124gr Gold Dot but I have also function tested the 124gr +P Gold Dot. I can usually get both at the local gunshows for ~$30/50rnds. The non +P version is a little more controllable.

The 147gr. +P offers the greatest penetration and least recoil and muzzle flash according to ballistics tests. These tests were performed with ballistic gel and four layers of denim to simulate heavy clothing. Both the 124 gr and 147 gr +P rounds performed well.
