  • It happened to ME!

Well, I went to the range after a long absence and it was not the greatest day. I shot my as-yet-unfired-by-Wifey P380 #2 and had multiple problems... slide not locking back, slide locking back prematurely and magazine drops, as well as FTFeeds. I really try to keep my thumb off the release by holding it down and away with my supporting thumb. I'm thinking that most of these malfunctions are caused by a less than optimal magazine catch.

Next I shot my PM45 and started with the carry mags and ammo. No problems there.

Then I started shooting my carry mags and ammo in my PM9. WTF! Steady grouping to the left! I shot 6+1 and then the spare 8-round extended grip carry mag with almost identical groups to the left! I looked at the sights and tried to see if one wasn't centered... sights okay.

I then started shooting some Craig Manufactured 124-gr FMJ reloads... I bought 1,000 over a decade ago at a gun show. These were going exactly where I wanted. I was using my old K9 7-round mags. At the end of the first of those mags(round 6 of 7), the pistol jammed and I saw the front extractor pin lying on the table!

By that time I was the only shooter and one of the owners was there and he went out and looked for the extractor for at least 10 minutes while I kept looking around my area AND keeping arriving shooters from firing. We had no success.

Now this sucked because I was carrying the PM9 and had shot up all the other ammo... and the P380 wouldn't fit in the Minituck, anyhow. I had no ammo for the PM45 which fits the Minituck as well. I DID have a new box of Speer 124-gr +P GDSB that I hoped to talk the guy who helped me into swapping for a box of .45 230-gr GDSB so I would have some of my regular carry ammo and could CC the PM45.

They had all versions of Gold Dots, including the Short Barrel ... 124-gr +P 9mm $32.95/20 and 230-gr .45 $38.95. The guy let me pay the difference plus tax... about $6.40 or so! Fantastic! That could have cost me $41.68 for 20 rounds!

Anyhow, the guy said they would keep an eye out for the extractor, but I'm going to order some spares for the other polymer models when I ask for a new mag catch for the P380.

I took the PM9 slide apart and the striker was rather wet and dirty, so I've gotten too much lubricant back there. The only part missing was the extractor. It now seems like that is another good part to have on hand, as well as the other parts of the extractor "train". I have a spare front pin... at least, for the PM45, and will look through my parts and see what else I might add to the order.

It's amazing that the extractor can "drop out" like that, but this isn't the first instance, though it does seem rare... but two in a week or so??

First picture is of PM45 results from 7 yards shooting first a MecGar O6 with unknown follower... not sure if stock... all in the bullseye. The right side is from the Colt O6 upgraded to 7 round capacity. The MecGar locked the slide back and the Colt didn't. Both mags protrude about 1/2" from the grip. I've put a strip of that "Wonder" silicon tape on the exposed part of the MecGar.

The next two are of the PM9 at 7 yards, shooting my carry mags and then the K9 mag with range fodder.

Wynn you have the worst luck with Kahrs that I have ever seen. At least this time they don't require a trip or four back to the mothership.
Attitude: it takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile...and 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

The olive branch is considered a symbol of peace, and good will. Last time I checked, it's still a switch.

Thank goodness, the store/range owner/employee let me do a deal for the carry ammo! I carried the PM45 the rest of my shopping outing. Backup was to buy a box of range FMJ for $17+tax. I couldn't see $2+ per bullet! I have plenty at home, but this trip I loaded all of my mags and only planned on reloading my PM9 carry mags before leaving the range.

I just sent an email to Kahr service enumerating my problems and asking about possible extractor parts exchangeability .

I guess that I'll be ordering four full sets of extractor assemblies for my polymer Kahrs and maybe a new P380 catch and or spring if they don't send me one.

I would hate to start the day at the range and have to leave with no working carry pistol when I was going shopping or going to be out for a long time!

When I lose metal parts in the grass, I get out my magnet, tie it to a string and swing it over the most likely area where I think the part fell off. If you get within 2 or 3 inches the part will jump onto the magnet. You can cover a big area in just a few minutes. I've found a lot of lost parts that way. Works better than trying to see it in grass. Spent brass cases at the range won't attract to the magnet, only steel or iron. If you have a magnet take it with you the next time you go back to thar same range.

That's not usually a part of my gear when I go to the range. Then there are a lot of steel cases, too. I wish that we could have seen where the extractor wound up... for future aid in finding it!

I am the one who posted about my CM 9 extractor falling out a few weeks ago. I just received the parts from Kahr but have not had a chance to shoot it to verify the repair. I did notice that the new rear extractor pin Kahr sent was a little longer than the one that came originally. My theory is that the shorter pin was not putting enough tension on the extractor to retain it. It's scary for sure especially since it happened to someone else as well

It may never happen... to me, again, but I would like to leave the range with my carry pistol functioning!

That was the point... taking 3 of my main 4 carry Kahrs that day. The PM9 has been my most carried pistol and the least problematic... until yesterday!

I was in the process of cleaning my pistols from yesterday's trip to the range and decided to pull the magazine catch. Yep, it appears the bearing edge has failed and rounded over... causing less than great lockups. Pix, of course!

just a bad mag catch, material had to be very soft. I know u don't slam mags either..
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

This was on my newest-been-back-to-Kahr-once-already P380 for Wifey. I think it's somewhere between 300 and 400 rounds since its return now. That must have been soft metal to fail like that so quickly. I have sent two emails now and am waiting to hear from Kahr. I'll be making an order up for my Polymers for a few more spare parts!

If I stop my the range to fire my EDC, I want to leave with it working!

I DO have a spare magazine catch for my P40... and slide lock springs and screws and washers for all.

I just checked on prices for the four parts including the extractor... $24.20 for each pistol, plus shipping... over $100... Oh, well....

I appreciate the suggestion, but I had a G17 back before my small, crippled hands were as bad as they are now, and it felt like I was holding onto a 2x4. I haven't handled a new G19 with the thinner grip, but I think it would still be chunky. So for me, "Next?" is still an unanswered question.
