I was just curious everytime I clean my gun I just take slide off and get it so i have barrel and slide by themselves while the rest is together and then I clean each of the three. Does one really need to take it apart more than that?

I personally don't think it's necessary. I usually do what you do. I find it does instill confidence to be able to take a gun down to all loose parts but I also very seldom do that.
I'm from the if it ain't broke don't try to fix it school. I'm also good at taking stuff apart but rather weak in getting it all back together.
So in my case I don't take em down any further than necessary.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

Personally I break my firearms down all the way, after a range visit. But I seldom visit the range so when I do I usually shoot 300-500 rounds. I find it assuring to be able to identify and acknowledge every part of every particular firearm. Some might say I have too much time on my hands.sigpic

A normal field strip, clean and lube is all your pistols should need. A modern gun should function for thousands of rounds without cleaning. Most of us clean our guns after each use, (field strip), out of pride and concern for optimizing performance.Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

And corrosion prevention. But I rarely go past field stripping either. I just wish someone would tell my 10/22 about that "thousands of rounds" idea. Only gun I've ever owned that gave me trouble when it was dirty.Originally posted by ripley16 View PostA normal field strip, clean and lube is all your pistols should need. Once a year I do a complete disassemble, cleaning and inspection of my guns. Between annual inspections, a field stripping and cleaning is all that is necessary. I can't tell you how many "broken" guns that I repaired for people that needed nothing more than a good cleaning.Never trust anyone who doesn't trust you to own a gun.

As others have noted, I clean my CM9 (field strip) after every shooting session. At some point in the not-too-distant future I anticipate a detail strip of the slide for cleaning. Experience with my Colts and Glocks has shown me that the firing pin/striker channel on those pistols get extremely dirty over time.Steve

I'm surprised that no one mentioned using the Non-Chlorinated Brake Cleaner to blast the crud from around the striker without disassembling the slide. There's a hole on the underside of the slide that the tip of the red straw will fit into while you spray, then hold the striker back after pushing in the safety block and spray through the striker pinhole. This will keep oil and debris from building up and impeding the striker's movement. I would advise "detailing" the slide at some interval if you shoot much. It's surprising how much debris... unfired powder, soot, and tiny bits of brass... winds up in there.
At least use the NCBC after each substantial amount of shooting at the range. There are stickies under Newcomer Welcome and Info... used to be under Kahr-Tech... maybe links at both with pictures and details.

I can't believe all these seasoned Kahr veterans haven't even mentioned that you should spray the striker channel out using non chlorinated brake cleaner spray through the clean out hole every time you clean your gun. That will keep that channel clear of any debris. Either that or you'll be needing to disassemble the slide and clean the channel manually about every 1000 rounds.Very interesting...
