  • CM9 arrived!

Picked up my brand new CM9 today. I have the lube diagram and prep thread up, and am working my way through them. Then I'm going to sit here and rack, press buttons, and work the slide release repeatedly to hopefully ease things up a bit.

    My findings so far:
My particular gun is a hell of a lot stiffer to rack than my friend's PM9. His is unfired, never cleaned, and never lubed. So they should be the same, and yet mine is as stiff as my Springfield XD was. This is disappointing, as this is the single most important aspect of any gun for me since I lack the hand strength rack really stiff slides. I really hope it loosens up a lot after the break-in period. My friend's PM9 is easy to rack, so I am optimistic that after 200-500 rounds mine will be the same or pretty close. The magazine release button in mine requires the button to be pressed very far in before it will drop the magazine. Not sure if this is normal, but I'm thinking I should take a Dremel to it and sand the magazine catch within the grip just a hair.

So the gun and I have our work cut out for us. I can't wait to fire my first rounds through it!

Looking at Kahr's website for both the PM9 and CM9, I see that there is an old and new version of recoil spring for the PM9 (13 and 15 coils, respectively), but only one version for the CM9 (counting mine, it's 13.5 coils). This makes me wonder if my friend's PM9 has a softer spring, and whether my gun would function reliably if I ordered whichever spring is in his gun and put that into mine (gotta get him to bring it over). Any thoughts?

You could "borrow" just his outer spring to try and it should work. But, I believe the rest of the old recoil assembly is slightly different. Jocko will probably jump in here with a definitive comment about that and will probably confirm that using the old style recoil spring does not pose a problem.

Uhm, don't take any metal off that magazine catch! Just put down the Dremel and back away slowly, with your hands where we can see them.

More seriously, the catch will loosen up pretty quickly. Lube it and you will half way there.

Your existing recoil spring will also loosen up pretty quickly too, but it will require putting a few rounds down range.
It would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

what Tucson stated is right on target. Kahrs are tight, expecially when new. It willbe a totally different gun after 200 rounds.things just seemt o mate up after that. Ucold change recoil springs from the PM9 to the cm( but I doubt if ur gonna ge tmuch difference and even if u do. THEN WHAT??? oNE RECOIL SPRINGS IS BROKEN IN AND URS IS NEW YET.

Hand racking a kahr is difficult for many, some never master it. I had alot of trouble at the beginning but after the gun got alittle broken in and I got more experience with the gun itself.I am able to do it with ease, but I can hand rack my G19 damn near with my teeth, it seems that easy. so I accept it as it is.

I don't know how ur counting the coils in ur cm9 but I would bet they are 15 coil not 13.5, but again I am assuming to. Ur kahr takes the 15 coil springs, the old style blunt nose versions took the 13 coil. ALL CM 9 TAKE THE 15 COIL. and those buggers are tight and stout.

I see ur a woman, female, opposite gender to us guys, and I have no doubt hand racking is gonna be an issue for awhile, so use the slide release lever as kahr ask s u to do until u can propelry hand rack. Trial and error at the range is the place to learnb and the place to make ur mistakes to.

Ur mag button is working just as it should, just get used to it and again more time with the gun and these little nit picky things will go away.

I am assuing ur reviews the kahr lube chart and the propper preppping of ur new kahr, both will help your first outting to be a fun one.

I am basically repeating what Tucson said in 1/5 the words that I just did, so follow his advice and just shoot it likeu stole it. Just sayin

Leave the mag button alone, when u file/grind anythinbg off u cannot replace it.

If ur friend ha sthe blunt noxe version of the PM9 then it would have the 13 coil set up but I would bethe ha sthe new beveled front slide version like ur cm9 so the springs are the same. There are no soft springs. ButI wold also bet if u took his spring and laid it out and urs next toit, that urs willbe much longer due to it being new and not yet setting in. And I would also bet the coil count is the same to. Hand racking at home wil help some. leaving the slide locked open will help some but nuttin works as good as the bang thing a few hundred times for setting recoil springs properly.

So I guess what I am sayin is don't compare a new broken in gun to your new out of the box gun. Ur OK, u have been here long enough to know the little quirks of kahrs. work with them and they will soon dissappear ..
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

          Starbug,

If this is old news to you,I apologize, but I suspect you're trying to muscle the slide.

First, welcome to the club! Second, everything these guys sad is spot on. Once u get some rounds down range, things will smooth out a lot. My cm9 with over 2k rounds is like a different gun from when it was new...its sweet! But leaving the slide locked back for a couple days before I got it to the range seemed to help a bit too. Enjoy the new gun, and let us know how the first outting goes! I'm sure jfootin will be along soon to give you your cm9 club badge.

Lol, ok I won't touch the Dremel! That issue wasn't even a problem anyway, I was just wondering if that was normal for these guns and planning to fix it if it wasn't. No magazine catch has been harmed in the last 24 hours, lol.

Thanks for the tips on leaving the slide locked back for a few days, the video (I'm gonna try that, never seen it done before), and reminder that things will change after 200 rounds (which is what I told my hubby and reminded myself of). I just found it odd that it was so different from my friend's equally new and unfired PM9. He literally brought it home 4 years ago and tossed it straight into his safe, where it's sat all this time untouched. So it's still just as virgin as mine, just 4 years older. The most attention it's ever seen was when I was holding it a couple weeks ago and racking the slide. He's never even done that to it. It's not even cleaned!

I'm going to take it out for it's first rounds this afternoon. I will let you guys know how that goes. I'm pretty excited. I have a full box of basic FMJ ammo, nothing fancy, that I will be using. I suspect this will take a couple weeks to go through and finish properly, since I will be limited by daylight hours, dry weather, and simply free time.

Oh, and Jocko, to answer your inquiry about counting the spring coils... my hubby counted them while I was looking on Kahr's website to check spring rates between CM9 and PM9. I have not verified his count. I'm going to try to get my friend to bring his PM9 over again so I can verify if he has the new or old version, as I don't recall now if he had the blunt nosed version or not. Thanks for the tip on identifying new vs. old slide. He'll probably swing by this weekend, at the soonest. But sometimes he does surprise and show up sooner.

I like the club badge, it's awesome! We should have that put onto t-shirts....

If your friends is 4 years old it might be the old style.

Even setting in the safe untouched that spring has taken it's set, course yours has been taking a set since it left the factory whenever it left the factory too but certainly not 4 years ago.

Working it will be good for you and for it, a win win situation.

If we do T Shirts we're doing 45's first. I'll make sure you get the very first one, so I can one up my co cyber hubby Jfootin, first time anyone snuck in on my relationships. Didn't see it coming. He's one smooth customer that one.

LOL, can't wait for the shirt. I guess you gotta keep your eye on him, eh?

Ah, I didn't think the spring would set just sitting there for 4 years, I figured it would have to be worked in order to set. Well if that's the case, then damn this gun is going to be super sweet when it's all broken in! God I can't wait. Hopefully I have enough time to dump that whole box of ammo into it this afternoon because I don't wanna be patient, lol.
