Looking at the CM40

Hello!!,

First post here and looking for some opinions. First of all I'm a 13 year veteran LEO and have extensive firearms training and experience. I'm not the 50 rounds a year to qualify LEO. I've found myself getting lazy lately with off duty carry mainly due to not owning a gun that's comfortable to carry. Poor excuse I know but it is what it is.

I've found some info on the Kahr CM40 and I can get one from Buds Police Supply for $368.00 shipped to my office. I own mostly Glocks and S&W M&P's. the M&P Shield looks really nice but they are like trying to find the holy grail. Give me your opinion on the CM40. Thanks in advance!!! Stay safe.

Welcome to the forum. It is a great group of people here with a wealth of knowledge. I don't own the 40 but have the CM9 as my EDC. I love it. Settle back and relax the CM40 folks will be here soon to give you the scoop. Again welcome.

u pass on the cm40, for it will cause those other mentioned guns to gather dust bunnies. No sense in me telling u the cm40 as light and small as it is the 40 cal is a pocket rocket, Ur prepaed for that. U won't find a nicer gun for what it is designed t do, but it is a hand cannon no less. The price is excellent.

Would be nice if u could rent/borrow a kahr cm model be it 40 or 9 mm to see how u like the loooooong but smoooth trigger system. again ur prior experience will help u adjust to kahr's triger system faster than most.... I being a kahr PM9 owner find my 9mm a very pleasant semi to shoot. It is my ever day carry and my full time range gun. I just love to shoot my 9mm..

Thanks for the welcome guys!! I appreciate the informative post here. I've shot a few Kahr's but not the CM models. I find Kahr makes a quality firearm that is not appreciated as it deserves to be. I think I'm going to take the plunge on the CM40. I figure I can "acquire" enough .40S&W ammo from work to get her broke in nicely.

Hi robert and welcome to the kahrtalk forums. I own a CM40 and love it its a very nice gun for carry being light,thin and easy to shoot due to its low bore axis and smooth trigger.

Kahr recommends a 200 round break in period,so do keep this in mind however most run fine out of the box. When you get your CM do be sure to clean and lube it according to the "proper prep of a new kahr" in the tech section here.

All of the above being said I think the CM40 is the best sub compact .40 your can get,you will be pleased with it.

Welcome to the forum! There is a wealth of valuable information in the New Member Area and the Kahr-Tech sections of the forum. I love my CM9! Eats everything. Shoots easier than you would think with such a small, light gun. IMO, the perfect carry gun. I can understand why you want the 40, what with the free ammo supply.

I bought my CM40 about a month ago, and am very pleased. I agree that the Shield is a great gun, and has an excellent trigger. (I haven't shot one, but got to handle one out in Phoenix a few weeks ago.)
The CM40 is more compact than the Shield, and shoots very well for it's size. I was the only .40 I could find that was really pocket-able. It does have a long trigger pull, but is very smooth, and is surprisingly accurate.

I don't own the CM40, but does not appear to be much different from my PM40. My son-in-law is looking to buy one to replace his Springfield for carry due to the wonderful experience he had shooting my PM40. The difference between his XD trigger and the much loooooonger trigger of the Kahr was not an issue for him. He really liked the size and weight difference and feels he would carry more with the CM40. Like me, he favors the 40 but being a 40cal is a non issue and not up for any comparative discussion by me anymore. He also fell in love with my CTL. He still likes his XD (good gun too) but he is more than sold on Kahr and the CM platform in 40.

I'd recommend you find one, give it a good once for and shoot it first to be sure you are going to be a happy Kahr owner like a majority of us. I also recommend you follow Mr. Jocko's prep guide found on this forum, as it will potentially save you some start up grief. It worked very well for me...thank you Mr. Jocko sir... He knows his stuff. Clearly, the CM seems to be much like the PM and is a far better value for a great, sexy, little, accurate gun in any caliber.

One additional recommendation - I would purchase a couple more mags. The CM only comes with one small 5 round mag, which is the CCW mag of choice for me most of the time. However, on the range, the extended 6 round mag makes the shooting the 40 a joy because it gives you a much better grip. You are likely to use the 6 round mag at the range and for OWB carry on occassion. Sometimes I use the longer mag IWB, just because. It changes up the gun quite a bit. JMO. Welcome and good luck with your decision.

no real gamble involved in buying a kahr. They are built like a tank, if it ain't right, membershere can makeit right, if they can't then kahr will step up and make it right. The cm40 is just as good a gun as the PM40, so don't be little urslef in thinking u bought a cheapie kahr.

I"ve had both CM9 and a PM40 and have shot several PM9's. I got the CM9 just when they came out and really, really liked it. Shoots exactly like a PM9. I bought the PM40 used early last year from a friend who was going all wheel gun. It was much more accurate to shoot than I thought possible for a small gun. But it has a kick to it, just like the small Glock or any 17 oz gun firing a 40 bullet. Using the long magazine helps.

I sold the CM9 to a friend for his wife as she did not want to handle the recoil of the 40. That was fine with me, I kept the PM40 and carry it every day. My bet is that you, as an experienced shooter, will like the CM40 just fine, but I hope you get a chance to try it first. I shot 50 rounds through mine Sunday, all the way out to 25 yards, with good results. Here is a 7" plate at 20 yards, not slow fire.

I"m gonig to order the Kahr CM40 form Buds Police Supply first of the week!! I appreciate all the help I've found here. Lots of good info on the Kahr pistols on this site. I'll let you all know how it goes. I've got a good supply of WWB 180gr to break it in and I also have a few boxes of Winchester Ranger 180gr hollow points for carry. :33:

It's so hard to buy now, and in such high demand, that most of my suppliers I deal with almost always sell out with in days. I have one box, and have a few more boxes coming with in a couple weeks. I also only have 3 boxes of Federal 180gr HST's right now too. Just trying to stock up. I also have 5 more boxes on order of Speer 90gr Gold Dot's for my Ke-Tec P3AT.

BTW, I have a CM40 for my 90% EDC, the Kel-Tec is only get's carried when clothing does not permit the CM40. I love mine so far, I only have 200 rounds through it, but I like it. I added a Pacmyar slip on finger groove grip and a Pearce grip extension, made a world of difference in comfort of shooting, but also a MUCH better draw, because the slip on grip is really tacky and I am able to get all fingers on the handle at one time.

I also ordered a couple Pearce grip extensions for my CM40. I like to get my pinky on the grip when shooting. I'm a bigger individual, 6'2" 215lbs. so I can hide a little extra 1/2" on the grip without problems. I'm looking at either a PJ Holster with a C clip attachment or the Mitch Rosen CLP IWB holster. My CM40 is ordered and should be arriving witin a week. I expect the holiday will delay it's arrival but no biggie. What kind of reliability out of the box have you experienced in your first 200 rounds?
