  • Want To Feed My CM9

I know that this is probably an ammunition sub-forum question, but I'm trying to choose a 9mm round to carry in my CM9.

I have 100 trouble-free rounds through my CM9 that I bought last November. I know that this number of rounds fired through a pistol probably wouldn't be enough to make most people comfortable with carrying the pistol, but of all the subcompact pistols I've owned, I've never experienced such solid, smooth, reliable functioning (all with various hollow-point ammo) as I've experienced with my CM9.

Having said that, I'm trying to choose from : Speer +P 124 gr short barrel hollow points, Federal HST +P 124 gr HP, or Fiocchi 124gr XTP (Extrema) standard pressure HP.

I've always been impressed with the feed/function/accuracy of the Fiocchi rounds in every 9mm I've owned.

The purpose of this thread is to ask those of you that have experience with any or all of these 3 rounds in your CM 9's, which you'd prefer to carry?

Moderators, if this needs to be transferred to the Ammo section, I understand.

    Thanks.

I think any of those are quality bullets and will work if needed. I have always seen very impressive results with HST that was my carry round 147 gr. Standard pressure.

Recently, I saw a video extolling the benefits of Hornady Criticall Defense which actually used a Kahr CM9 and the results were consistent through heavy clothing. 12.5 inches penetration through geletan and 1.5 times diameter expansion. I carry these rounds in my CM9.

Speer 124 +P is what i use, recoil not bad.

The first two mentioned have worked fine in my PM9 and I believe both make for a very decent SD round. The XTP bullet has a decent enough reputation so my guess is that Fiocchi would likewise do well in a SD situation. Guess I'm saying you'd do fine with any of the three for a SD round.

IMHO +P loads are wasted in short bbls (like magnums out of a snub revolver), I prefer std pressure 147gr bonded in my CM9 (more push but less snap for faster followup shots).

I carry HST 147gr in mine.

My CM9 finds HST 147gr+P and SGD 124+P quite appetizing with no burping or indigestion.
Analyzing ballistic gel tests, it becomes quite apparent that Speer Gold Dot 124+P is the most devastating.
I'll be trying the short barreled version of the aforementioned very soon as I just bought 100 rounds. If my CM9 has no digestive health issues, I'll switch to them. WHY? Cause Speer knows what they're doing. Maximum ballistics is their specialty and has been for years. Just ask several local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

The Gold Dot and HST loads are great. The Fiocchi load runs a little slow (sub-1000fps) and had iffy expansion out of short barrels in my crude ballistic testing.

I carry Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P in my Kahr CM9. They seem to feed and shoot great. I choose the +P because of the short barrel. It gives me, I feel, a bit more velocity which translates to a bit more energy. And the polymer plug keeps them from plugging, ensuring expansion.

Gold Dot 124+p or 147 here.

Hornady states these loads "Are not optimized out of short barreled pistols"
In this test, it did quite well out of the G26 3.6'' barrel however.
Kahr CM9 as we know is a bit shorter at 3.0''

Yep saw that video. I just bought 100 rounds of self defense 9mm rounds

Hornady Critical Duty +P 135Gn, box of 50 for bargain at $32.
CCI Speer 9mm 124 Grain +P Gold Dot, box of 50, also for $32.
Shipping for both about $12 together, which comes to ~$0.75/round.
There is no way I am paying some of the crazy prices for 9mm.
I was happy with finding them for a decent price.

I really was looking for Federal HST +P 124Gn..... You can find regular pressure for reasonable price, not HST +P 124Gn, except at X2 over priced auction sites. I've got a hugh supply of round nose reload supplies. I reload.

What ballistic theory, science and physics do you derive this statement?
Why would you say the +P is wasted on short barrels? Can you back it up?

+P boosts the velocity and energy, all things being equal, within limits,
even on short barrel. Limits being that of the ammo case and gun.

With that said standard pressure is fine.

Short barrels never deliver same velocity or bullet spin as longer barrel
pistols with the same ammo. Higher pressure may not be as efficient or
as well utilized with a short barrel, but it can't hurt (if gun is high quality,
                          made for +P).

Down side, manufactures charge a premium for +P which is part marketing.
Part of it I'm assuming is the higher QC they need to push the pressure limits.

As far as recoil, I have no problem controlling the recoil with +P. Most
people report very controllable recoil w/ +P. You have to remember the
manufactures have to stay below 38,000 PSI... +P means that they
control the powder more closely to push the limit without exceeding it,
and charge more money for it.

Nothing wrong with "standard" pressure. I've been carrying standard
                          Remington 115Gn JHP I bought from Wal-mart a year. I only recently
stepped up to "self defense" loads. They call it personal defense. You
shoot some one at close range at the right spot it will be deadly. The LE &
FBI test criteria is extreme. Not sure I need to shoot people through walls.
With that said I want the best quality ammo that has been tested and LE
uses. I know the CCI Speer Gold Dot +P and Federal HST +P are used by
                          the Po-Po.

Bottom line +P or not, use "Premium Ammunition" for carry.

gee, I wonder if the BG woldnotice any difference one way or the utter. Alot more +P 9mm offered than none +P in defense stuff. eash to his own. In my home if u come in at night YOU WILL GET SHOT WITH +p.. Fokk with my family somewhere else and U WILL GET SHOT WITH +p.
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

                              According to ballisticsbytheinch.com test barrels 3" & 4"
Federal 125 gr. Hydrashock JHP 988 fps 1016 fps
                              CorBon125 gr.JHP +P 1170 fps 1226 fps
                              Speer 124gr. GoldDot Short Barrel 1108fps 1203fps
Also I believe to be true the greater the expansion the less the penetration. In the real world not all shots are taken at at a "full frontal".
