Cm9 barrel peening after 500 rounds.

My cm9 I purchased at the end of August has been 100% flawless as far as shooting goes. I've been to the range twice with it and each time have put approximately 500 rounds through it. After my last range trip I noticed the top of the barrel hood was deformed where the hood meets the top of th slide. After cleaning it, I began to rack the slide and noticed it would lock up. Thinking I had the recoil spring in wrong I disassembled it and put it back together. Again, it would lock up after racking the slide. I then researched the problem and found other had the same issue with the barrel peening. I contacted Kahr through email and they advised to fill out the shipping label request form and send it in. So right now I'm waiting for the to email me back with the RMA number.


I also noticed the inside of th slide is very rough and not machined very well compared to my cw45 and cw380. It's so rough that it is causing gouging marks in the frame and recoil spring. I'm hoping Kahr will be able to resolve this as I've not had an issue with there guns before.


Another question, I have a traction grip on the gun right now. Should I take it off before sending it to be serviced in case they need to replace the gun?

They should get that taken care of. It looks like there is quite a burr on the slide rail as well as unusual interference on the barrel. I've never had to send anything in to Kahr, but if there is something you want to be sure and get back on the pistol, I would remove it before sending it out.

Looks like barrel peening to me. My K40 experienced that and it ended up with a new slide and no issues since.

I'm hoping mine will be the same way. Even if I didn't have this problem, the slide is poorly manufactured and not what I've experienced in the past with Khar's quality.

I've always wanted to see an obvious case of peening and now I have. Ive never had that happen so far. Thanks for posting.

Would I be able to take the traction grips off and reuse them again? I have no idea if Kahr is going to completely swap the gun for a new one or reuse the frame and give me a new barrel and slide. I would hate to take the grips off and receive the same frame back, although the traction grips aren't too expensive to replace.

I predict you'll get the same frame back with a new slide and barrel. That's what happened to me but nothing is for sure.

I think I'd personally leave them on, like you say they aren't all the expensive anyhow.

Unless there is a defect in the frame, Kahr will replace slide and barrel. I ended up with a new pm9 when I sent mine it for barrel peening issue. It was an older flat nose slide and they replaced it with the longer tapered nose slide/barrel. The frame needed modifications to make the new style slide/barrel fit. Those modifications looked terrible and I pretty much demanded they make it look as good as it did when it arrived the first time or replace it.

Yeah, I doubt they'll replace the frame as well. The frame is fine other then gouging marks from the rough slide.

Update- I received my cm9 via Fed-Ex yesterday. I would have recieved it sooner but no one was home the first two days they attempted to deliver it. Kahr replaced the slide and barrel. The slide seems to be more refined then the one that initially came with. I'll be taking it to the range later on today. I plan on putting 200 rounds through it. I'm guessing it will need to be broken in again, although it came with the same guide rod and spring. I don't mind that though, any excuse to shoot.

I had the same issue with my brand new CM9 and Kahr only filed down the peened barrel after I sent it in. I haven't had any issues since but you can definitely see where it was filed. I guess it would hurt the resale value but I don't plan on selling it anytime soon.

I am also experiencing peeling on the barrel hood. It didn’t start happening until I ran a small amount of +p ammunition thru it. Mine is out of the one year warranty. I am reluctant to purchase a new slide, barrel and recoil spring. Was there any factory recalls on earlier CM9s?

If it's peening most likely Kahr would replace it despite the 1 year warranty. That's sometimes considered a manufacturing defect.
Certainly worth sending them an email and asking, pictures would help them make a decision.
