  • Ammo question

I thought about posting this in the ammo section but since this is a platform specific question I felt it would be appropriate to post it here.

Ten years ago or so I was in the market for a 9mm. In anticipation of the success that I usually have when I have decided to purchase a firearm and having a personal rule to always have appropriate ammo for any firearm I own, I purchased several 25 round boxes of Remington Golden Saber 125gr +P ammo.

Fast forward to today. I have a PM9 on the way and was looking at ammo only to discover that Remington has discontinued the Golden Saber 125gr +P ammo so I need to look for something new.

I would appreciate for PM9 owners, especially owners of the 2011 and up version, to provide feeding and extracting experience with different brands and types of self defense ammo. Not looking for ideas on terminal performance, only feeding and extracting. If it does not feed and extract 100% reliably terminal performance is a moot point.

I am looking especially for information on 124 gr varieties. Please specify if the problems, if any, were magazine, feed ramp, extraction or whatever related issues.

    Thanks!!!

I have been running the same Golden Saber 124 +0 in both my MK9 and PM9 with no issues. I haven't bought the +P koolaid yet. I got a bunch of 115gr Blazer Brass range ammo that functions fine as well. Accuracy tends to improve with the heavier bullets. FYI.

Good to know that what I have feeds well and that I am good for now.

Sadly it has been discontinued so I need to find something else.

I carry Federal 124 gr HST in my CM9. No issues at all. For me the perfect carry round with this gun.

          Agreed with this!

Just because it has been discontinued doesn't render it useless. You have it, why not carry it?

I will but at some point they will be expended. Every so often I shoot what has been carry ammo and replace it with fresh.

Fiocchi 124 gr XTP "Extrema" works very well in my Kahr CM9 and its terminal performance is good. I also have tested the Fiocchi 147 gr XTP "Extrema" and Federal 124 gr Hydra-Shok. But I prefer the Fiocchi due to cost and performance (as found on a couple of ammo comparison sites). The only issue with my CM9 pistol is its tendency to have rounds nose dive on the first round when I slam the magazine into the grip to forcefully. If I simply push the mag into the grip until it clicks then I have no problems.

I only use the cheapest crap I can find in my cm9. It shoots everything equally well. Currently using Perfecta that I found in Walmart. Also used a lot of tulAmmo with the steel case. And when I can find Winchester white box for a real good price, I use that. Long story short, this gun shoots everything well.

                    For self defense?

It would appear that the crisis has been averted.

I was in Sportsman's Warehouse today looking at self defense ammo and saw the new Remington Ultimate Defense. They had both this and Golden Sabers in 40 S&W. I pulled one of each out of the box and compared them. Same color, same shape, same depth and shape of scoring on the jacket, same color, shape and size of the hollow. I looked at them very carefully. If there is a difference, I could not find it.

So if there is no point, why is it called a hollow point?

Yes, why waste expensive ammo on a dirt bag.

The last time I was at the range, I shot a box of 50 Remington range fodder. I was surprised at how clean it was. I used to use WWB, Fiocchi, and they are under powered and oh so dirty. I have been carrying Hornady XTP 115 gr. but it seems to be a bit underpowered. Back to the 147 gr. HST's.

Actually, in some calibers I believe I've heard Fiocchi is a bit hotter than the typical American loading. I agree with your on the 147 gr 9mm loadings for SD ammo. My favorite right now is Fiocchi's XTP "Extrema" offering. Shoots very well in my 9mm pistols, including the Kahr CM9. The only one that prefers a lighter bullet is a Walther PPS. I use Fiocchi's 124 gr Extrema in that one. I'm reluctant to carry the lighter 115 gr bullets in my carry 9mm pistols.
