  • How to buy a PM9...wisely

First off, thanks to all of you guys for the great info on this site. I don't have a PM9 yet, but I feel like I already know it as well as my other guns.

Next weekend, I plan to buy. I'd appreaciate any feedback on my 'plan' below. I don't buy often, buy new and tend to keep them forever (unless I have no option!). I have a P220, SW 6906 9mm and a BuckMark (cheap date). Fortunately, I can shoot on my property and do so frequently. Also have a CCW permit.

There's a gun show next weekend and I plan to scour the vendors for the best deal. I'm thinking night sights as the only addition. I think I'm looking at about $600 - $650 for a decent deal, but not sure. My other option is to work with a local dealer who has good reviews for being fair with prices. He also has PMC bronze 115 grs FMJ for $11/bx everyday. Good round for most of the break in work? I have a lot of UMC stuff as well.

I'm not new to autos, but new to concealing one. From research, the PM9 is the one that seems best to learn comfortable conceal with. And meets my expecatations on qaulity.

I'd appreciate any advice, thoughts, warnings, tips that could save me some $ or better match my choice with my expecations. I've scoured the existing threads, so there may not be many nuggets of wisdom left....I may just be dealing with that 'check everything out' feeling I get before dropping close to a grand.

Welcome to the forum! The other knuckleheads are probably still nursing hangovers this morning so I'll do my best. According to Professor Jocko (well respected/revered and technically oriented member of this forum) the first thing is to check the "Kahr Tech" thread that talks about the proper prepping of your new Kahr and then check the Lube diagram thread. Most have found that by proper cleaning and prepping (racking slide 200-300 times, clean out striker channel, proper lubrication) takes a lot of the break in hassle to a minimum. I unfortunately found this forum after the fact and had a definite DOH! moment.
Most folks here are more than willing to help/offer suggestions from technical issues to holster suggestions and all the way to Dear Dietrich (kinda like Ms Manners and Advice to the Hopelessly in Love column all rolled into one - a real hoot to read!).
As to the best price and best way to buy - well, Bud's Guns is mentioned quite a few times, GunBroker too and some prefer to go to a local gun shop for the support and possible test drive before they buy.
I hope that helps and may give you a good start to your new love affair with your PM9. By no means is this all inclusive - once everybody stumbles to the keyboards this morning you will have many folks doing a much better job. That's the thing I like about this forum - respect from all and comedy in abundance! Enjoy.

Maybe you've already considered it and made your decision, but think about the CM9 instead. The trade-offs are minimal, and the savings will be ~$150-200. Here's a thread that does a pretty good job of addressing the differences. Again, feel free to ignore this post if you've already considered this, but the CM9 is going to be my next purchase.

I would say buy a CM9... Unless saving about $200 doesn't seem wise to you

not sure if there was a response to this already , but is that frt sight from a 2009 production and thus 2 years old already as far as life expectancy ?

don't u wonder just a little bit about a national company that can't spell installation correctly ?
first line of defense , my faithful Pit ..... don't mess with Mr Kane

loving it in Georgia - I wasn't born here , but I got here as fast as I could !

I was just checking the whole sale price of the PM9. Getting a new one with ns in that price range will be hard. The base price without ns is not much under 600.00.

I normally beat Buds prices so I have not checked their prices.

              + whatever on the CM9 - LOL!
It looks like the real deal (without the price gouging)
Was considering a PM9 myself but changed my mind!
BTW I stopped drinking so I'm up in the am LOL!

Yes they are stamped 09. If mine goes dim in 10 yrs instead of 12yrs I will just replace it and be happy I only spent a whopping $3 per year to have a N.S. YMMV.

Why would a spelling error be relevant to buying a night sight???.... NO I don't wonder about Kahr. YMMV

I've been all over the place deciding on the PM9 or P380. The CM9 adds a new dimension to the discussion. If the PM9 is a higher quality then I would go with that, but I don't know much about the CM9 yet, so I have a lot of reading to do. This is going to be my SD weapon, so no shortcuts for me.

Nope.... keep reading, they have been very, very well reviewed by many on this forum and others.

It is not really a new design... 95% it's the exact same as a PM9. The slight differences have been proven reliable over time by the CW vs. P lines.

CM9 is the way to go!

The CM9 has been the most successful release, ever! It IS a PM9 with a few inconsequential changes to reduce the price. The only piece that is too cheap and needs replacing is the plastic front sight. But Kahr has the Trijicon front sight for it for $30, easy to install.

Plus, they shine up real nice!

                          See the slide show HERE.

Decide you want one on Tuesday. Go to gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com to see who has the best price on the model you want, then buy it on Wednesday. Pick it up at your LGS on Friday. Head to the range on Saturday. 700 rounds later, you be smilin' like me!

^^ What he said! Guns to be cautious about are brand new different design models not half step upgrades of proven designs. The CM9 is the proven design of the PM9 with a couple small improvements and less expensive parts where it doesn't matter.
