New CM9

I read a bunch here before going to the range for the first time with my new CM9. I started with the 6rd mag and a 7rd mag. Both followers would hit the mag catch so I filed the followers. I could not find the pics of others that had filed the followers so I did a best guess. I thought I had that problem taken care of.
Racked the slide by hand for break in. Polished the feed ramp.

The first 50 rds were Geco 124 fmj blue/black box. I shot half the box with the 6 shot mag then finished with the 7 rd mag. No malfunctions.

The next 50 were Win USA bulk. No malfunctions with the 6 rd mag. I had 4 nose dives with the 7rder. 3 were the second round, one 3rd round.

Next 50 was Lawman 115gr. No malfunctions with the 6rd mag. 4 nose dives with the 7rd.

At this point I relubed the pistol.

Next 50 was Geco 124gr orange/black box. One nose dive with the 6rd mag.

Some of my observations.
When the nose dives happened the bullet nose was beneath the feed ramp.

The magazines seem short front to back, the nose of the bullets seem to ride the front of the mag.
When the mags are loaded the second round varies in nose position.

If I remove more of the side of the follower to clear the mag catch won't the bulled hit the mag catch?

I installed the barrel without the slide and noticed the bottom of the feed ramp can hit the mag follower when the barrel is in the rear position. Seems like it would also hit the nose of the bullet or cause drag. Has this been discussed before?

I also tried 33 rds of Speer 124 +P, I had on failure to feed but it was nose up.
I did not like this load because they seem on the long side for the magazines.

I also tried 11rds of 115gr HP standard pressure ammo. I liked it a lot better.
Short truncated cone design, more room in the mag. Smoother shooting.
No failures.

I plan to work on the followers a little more then try it again.

second range trip

Well I finished my second range trip with my new CM9 and had better results.
I cleaned thoroughly after my last trip. Left the slide locked back for about 5 days. I removed one half of a coil off the recoil spring.
Filed a little more from the 7rd mag follower. I also removed the mag catch and filed a little on the edge that protrudes inside the magazine.

I started with a box of Geco 124 fmj orange and black box.
Shot the 7rd mag four times with 7 rounds. Had 3 nose dives on the third round. Shot the rest of the box with the 6rd mag, no problems.

Next up was a box of Fiocchi 115gr FMJ. Shot the entire 50rds with the 7rd magazine, no problems. I would say that my 7rd mag is ammo sensitive.

Shot 26rds of British 95gr JSP using both mags, no problems.
Shot 22rds of Hirtenberger 100gr SP using both mags, no problems.

I have confidence in the 6rd mag. I may just buy another 6rd mag and keep the 7rd mag for range use only.

I plan to order the Trijicon front sight next. I will carry it for the first time this week. So far I like the size and trigger pull. It's a very comfortable gun to shoot.

Sounds like you're getting it working. To read more about sanding the followers, go to the Kahr-Tech section and look for the sticky about the CW45 by gb6491. There have been lots of posts about problems with the 7 round mags. I haven't tried one, but they don't sound very reliable. Good luck getting it running. Lots of good expertise around here to help you out.

Nice reports. Some here hate the 7 round magazines. I have one that has been good as long as I load the round by releasing the slide stop.

look at ur recoil outter spring and examine the open end of that spring. doe sit ride over that outter recoil spring tube with no hindrance??? If it does not open that end up a tad until is rides over that outter recoil tube with no hindrance...

be veryt sure that the mag follower is still not grappign that mag catch button. In the kahr tech section under propper prepping of ur new kahr it tells you how to check to see if this is happening. I would check every magazine u have for this, as it does happen and that follower has to glid eup freely through themagazine tube. No the bullet will not be grapping the magazine catch either.

What u can do to test this theory out is to take ur 6 round magazine spring and install it in the 7 round magazine and shoot it. This is like cutting a coil+ off the 7 round spring but without realy doing it. If it works OK then cut off a coil of ur 7 round magazine and retest. Some here seem to think that 7 round mag spring is to stout. Some have had positive results in what I just stated to u. Notmy idea, just passing on a fix that has been tried with some success. Ur not ruining anything by exhanging springs around ..

In readig ur post I noitice what looks like u shoot at least 200 rounds, if this is at one session. some issues could just be "tired" shoter and then things happen andu don't know it. Kinda document ur next shooting session with some round count as to when certain things happen. If they don't happen in the first 100 rounds but later downt he road, ,,,fatigue could be an issue. I am sur eyou have the gun properly lubed per the kahr tech section sticky. KAHR LUBE CHART. It is a dandy..

You are so right about shooter fatigue. On both range sessions between 50 and 100 rounds I noticed that my hand was shaking as I recorded each mag result.

It's a really fun gun to shoot, you just want to keep shooting. I found a great practice load in the Fiocchi. I just need to find a good carry load to function test and I'll be set.

This forum is the greatest thing for new Kahr owners. These little guns certainly can have their share of idiosyncrasies. It really helped a lot to read about the potential problem areas before going to the range.
The people here are the nicest, most helpful around.

a person just does not see his faults all the time. I use dto be a devote archeyr shooter. Would ge tup in the morning befrore I go to work and shoot a 100 arrows. I ate and sept it--and I know many time sI over done it to. It tok another person watching me to tell me and convince me of what my shooting ills were. I would start out doing very goodat 20 yars and thenafter awhile I was shooting low, and all over the place. This knowledeagle person noticed that the more I shot, is when I started to drop my bow arm. We call that "peeking". not a good thing to do but the shooter doesnt realze he is doing it. I just loved to shoot so much that even though tired and not knowing it, I was not helping myself. Once I realy accepted what was going o I shortened y shooting sessions and things started to change for rthe better. Shooting a gun can be similar. Take areak during shootng sessions, let the gun and you rest apart from each other..

Exactly! That's one reason I only shoot a few mags at the range. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
