  • Tritium Night Sights Malfunction and Totally Inadequate Customer Service

I purchased Tritium Night Sights for my new Kahr PM40 but the front supposedly Tritium dot could not even be seen at all in the dark. Kahr had my gun dealer ship the whole upper part of the gun back to them. But when it came back it was not any better. Obviously their repair staff does shoddy work. Furthermore, how could it get shipped back without somebody double-checking to ensure that they got it right? Now they say it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get it repaired. This was going to be the gun I keep under my pillow for self defense at night in the home. I am frustrated. Anybody else get short shrift or shoddy service from KAHR?

My PM9 was purchased with a dead front night site.

Most companies cut the slide so the sight can be replaced by normal people. Not Kahr. After attempting to put the sight in myself, I had to ship the upper back to Kahr so they can put it in a press and install the sight. So I am not impressed.

      Whoa,

Are you telling me Kahr has to install the front night sights??

I was considering getting them for my PM9 and P40, but to have to ship them and wait, not too happy with that.

Course, do want them installed properly, just didn't know Kahr had to do it.

Kahr doesn't have to do it if you know a gunsmith who has a sight press. Kahr's dovetails are very tight and using a brass punch to get the sights in will likely ruin the sights internally and they wont glow...this is probably what happened to the OP if his gunsmith used a punch to install them.

The dove tails are very tight on Kahrs. Just like Kimbers or other guns I have played with. You do not drive sites out with a punch. You need a site press. When working with a tritium site, you would never use a punch on any type of firearm. You risk breaking the insert and therefore not having any "glow" in your site.

Kahr is not the only one to remove/install sites, just make sure you use a competent gunsmith. (keyword here is competent!)

This has been talked to death here, before.

I believe you'll have much better luck sending the slide to the SIGHT company, NOT Kahr.

They do it all day long and that's ALL they do, don't run out of sights, and if they break one, just grab another.

The slide can be sent without any drama because it's not a gun.

            just sayin'

^^ And they will be fresh. What I've read: "Tritium sights are nuclear and have a life of about 7 years, but they begin dimming from the start." I haven't had them but if getting them I want them as fresh as possible as I need bright.

Tight is understood, but this was way beyond tight. I couldn't remove the non-functional front sight no matter how long I beat on it with a hammer.

Welcome to the forums. Just curious, did you get any paperwork back with your slide saying they replaced the sight? Did you contact Kahr after it was returned or did the dealer do it?

Thread locker can do that as well as a tight dovetail. Did you try any heat on the sight?

The fact is you need a sight press for these sights. Kahr notes this in their install instructions. I know that because I purchase and had a set of meprolights installed on my PM9.

I didn't even think someone would put locktite on it.

After the sight started to deform I decided I wasn't going to get the new sight in so it was going to Kahr.

                        Something doesn't seem right....
1 - Kahr does not require a dealer to send a gun (or slide) back for service as you stated.
2 - You stated you bought night sites for your new PM40. Who put them on? The dealer? (as gb6491 appears to have assumed)

gb6491 raises a good point. Are you sure the dealer even sent the gun to Kahr to have the night sites installed? Or, did the dealer do it? This could be a case of the dealer jerking you around.

Hard to believe Kahr would quote you an excessive turn around time for a site replacement due to their mistake.

I installed the Trijicon front night sight on my CM9 myself. But, sent the slide in and had Kahr install the rear night sight. They did a good job on mine. No scratches and dead on centered. The Trijicon night sights are warranted for 12 years of glowing. Trijicon unlike other night sight companies offers an inexpensive relamping service for when the do go dim.

Let's get all the facts before we assess blame. Punches and sights in the hands of amateurs, should not be used in the same sentence. Sight pushers are available for relatively low cost. Buy one or have the gunsmith do it for you. My Ed Brown Kobra Carry came with Novak's the rear sight was in a plastic bag with some locktite. Simple install after I centered it for my eyes. My KAHR came with pre installed night sights and shoots exactly on POA.
