  • Gander damaged my PM9!

hello guys, noob from Indianapolis here.
thought i'd share my recent incident with a local Gander Mountain.

i ordered a set of Williams (green) sights from Kahr for my PM9, and upon finding out that none of the local gunsmiths want to touch 'em, i called Gander to see if they'd do the install. they said "sure! bring 'em in", so i did later that afternoon.

guy greeted me, i asked him if they could install the sights, and he took my slide and my sights into the back room. told me to wait a few minutes.

after about 10 minutes, he came back out with the slide, with my new sights put in! i was about 20 feet away from him when i saw him come out of the gunsmith room, so i rushed to the counter all excited.

FRONT SIGHT CRACKED, SLIDE CHIPPED. I said WHAT... THE... $#@%?
I asked the guy what happened, and he starts rambling on and on about how the Williams sights are made of cheap material and they're really weak, and that you always run the risk of damaging the sights and the slide when installing these types of sights. I asked another guy that was next to him (which was the actual gunsmith. guy who worked on my gun was just a dept manager) and he said the same thing. "Yeah...nothing we can do about that now..."

i left the store, came back to my office, called Gander Customer Service. they actually had a prompt for "Retail Experience". so i told them the story, they contacted the store manager. store manager called me back, apologized, told me he would replace my slide, asked me to bring in the whole gun.

already a long story, but to keep it short, they're actually replacing the whole gun now. i requested the all black unit (instead of my original bitone), with trijicon night sights already built-in from factory. supposedly their warehouse had one in stock, and it's due in by Friday or next Monday, they say.

i guess the story isn't over until i get my replacement.

Well, at least you're getting a new replacement. The only thing you've lost was your time. Maybe the other gunsmiths knew this would happen and thereforewouldn't touch it.

And now you (and everyone) knows why no one is interested in installing sights not even bought from them.

The risk of damage and expense is way too great and if they charge more than $20, the whining starts.

It's too bad the GM gunsmith didn't lock up his tools when he left (I did).

I think sending the slide to the sight maker is the safest thing to do.

      Sorry you had/have trouble,

Sounds like their customer service is going to take care of you. Yet you are still complaining?

        Just curious.

If you have the proper tools there are no excuses.

Sounds like the moron used a hammer and punch.

OP said: "guy who worked on my gun was just a dept manager".

The managers at the GM, where I worked, were ALL former Home Depot managers who knew nothing about guns and treated them like lumber.

I went in the gun room when the used handguns arrived from the GM warehouse and they had thrown the guns in a pile, while they checked them in.
The "gunsmith" was a new graduate from some gunsmith college with no experience, who talked about nothing but 1911s.

I thought it would be a fun place to work part time but soon found out the struggles of unskilled minimum wage workers with a lot of debt, families, etc.
The back biting, butt smooching was extreme in that crowd and the Richard Craniums trying to buy guns was eye opening.

Well, that sure was a first class corrective action by the store manager! I wonder if he docked some pay to make up for it? Should have, IMO.
              Very interesting...

I'm sorry for your original gun. The gun did not deserve to be mistreated.

I'm happy for you. The store manager is taking good care of you.

I have always had excellent results when doing business with Gander Mountain. I especially like being able to order bullets for reloading at a decent price -- with FREE shipping.

i'm not complaining, just making a point.

only reason why their customer service is taking care of me is because I contacted the headquarter and it elevated to the store manager. no one seemed to give a crap about taking care of me when it actually happened.

to me, good customer service is preventing upset customers, not preventing lawsuits.

All the Ganders in my area have closed their gunsmith counters because they did so poorly. Most near me send any work to Ahlman's. I know even Cabela's in this area all use Ahlman's.

Yep, same down here jeepster - they started sending them off to be repaired almost a year ago.

Sounds like a good end to a bad experience.

I like my local Gander Mountain for the most part, when I do find a deal - it's a good one.

I would not have GM work any of my guns if someone paid me.

                          update: new slide w/ pics

just picked up my pm9 from Gander Mountain today,
they ended up just replacing my slide (as opposed to replacing the entire gun, like they said they would), which i didn't care either way since my original gun was almost brand new anyway. night sights were installed from factory this time. attached a few pics.

they replaced my slide with the newer version (with the loaded chamber indicator) which was a pleasant surprise.

Good for you. GM lucked out that you aren't one of the many owners who hate LCIs. From what I read on forums, most guys would consider an LCI a deal breaker when considering a purchase. I don't mind them.
