  • Yorkie hates my pm9

I have a small yorkie that's almost 14 yrs old and has been a good dog. Never been a yapper and when she does bark something is definitely going on. The problem I'm having is that every time I rack the slide, dry fire, click on the ext safety etc (yes I have one), basically anything that goes click on my gun my dog goes into some kind defense mode with the whole growling/barking thing.
Tried doing things in front of her to show her it's just me or in another room at the other end of the house..out of sight..doesn't matter, she still goes ballistic. Curious if any one else has same issues ? We kind of laugh about it but it's becoming a bit of a pain in the you know what.

. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

I had a beagle named Nipper. I could make ten trips a day down the basement stairs and that dog wouldn't follow me. But if I went down there to put on my hunting gear, somehow that dog knew. I don't know how she knew, but she knew. She would damn near destroy the door to our attached garage trying to get into my truck.

You don't have a Yorkie, your wife does. That Yorkie has you and she knows it. You aren't the Alpha female of the pack.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

My dad has a Brittnay that runs away anytime I pull any firearm out. Forget it if I rack a slide. Had a German Shepard when I was a kid that was the same way, even with a camera!

Not a lot of pics of the Shepard...lol

Some dogs don't care and others seem to sense something that may put an aburpt end to their lives...I don't know?

Does your yorkie hate it or just get excited.

My jack russell terrier goes all excited whenever i get out the flyswatter to go after flies or wasps and also when i get out the pellet gun to rout marauding bushy tailed rats he goes just about apoplectic with excitement because i'm showing the same feeling about the btr's as he has.

it takes a lot of training to get a dog to react to gunfire let along the cycling and other functions of a weapon. In law enforcment and the military you will see the handler dry firing and practicing this around their partner so they get used to the noise. Because of the harsh enviorment they are put in they handler has to know how his partner is going to react. Try looking up some clips online to see what I am talking about if you are interested. I've seen them do this on k-9 cops on tv if you have the ability to watch that.

Our toy poodle gets real scared when I'm practicing with my Laserlyte, like he senses my "practice aggression." He cowers and his tail goes down. I never ever point a gun anywhere near him, so I don't know where he gets the instinct from.

Otherwise, he's the calmest, sweetest most even-tempered animal I've ever known (unless there's a cat or squirrel outside).

Definitely not excited. Growing up we had an English setter for pheasant hunting..she would get excited.. and was a very good bird dog by the way. The only way to explain my yorkie is defensive mode..were talking teeth baring snarling kind of thing. Doesn't matter if I'm the one with the gun or my wife/dtr..somehow she just seems to sense its dangerous or something. Other than TV shes never heard one fired either. Just hoping one day she will get over it.

Won't it damage their ears? :40:

I hope not, but it seems nobody knows.

I've done lots of research, talked to the vets and plenty of dog owners, nobody knows for sure. As far as damaging, probably not.

Everything you find online says the frequency the vacuum creates probably hurts their ears, causing them to bark and 'play' with the vacuum. I cant find anything that is hard proof evidence stating otherwise however have you ever seen a dog respond to a high pitch frequecy that we KNOW hurts ther ears? They cower, rub their ears on the ground, try to get away from the noise, or sometimes try attacking. It looks painful.

Thats not how this is though. It almost seems like my dogs like it, like they are really playing. Think about the shop vac and blow dryer...wouldnt they have the same reaction to those if the frequency thing were true? But most of the time, it is not the same reaction. Cesar Milan from the History channels 'Dog Whisperer' seems to think the same way. He says the vacuum is a loud noise, but not painful, and creates a vibration which the dog may not be used to. Mixed with the repetitive back and forth of the sweeper and now, thru a dogs eyes it almost looks like a game, catch me if you can. Cesar also says this is most common in herding dogs (unfortunate for me) and sporting dogs. This would explain why my friends 2 boxers can sleep right thru the sweeper. --Cesar also says these things can be broken (but only if you believe a guy whose name is Cesar Milan haha) --

--anyway, thats what Ive come up with, and I'd like to think its not hurting their ears but we need a scientist type to do some tests. and what the hell, at the end of the day, the house still needs vacuumed and an occassional fight to the death is comical if anything.
