Anyone who thinks dogs don't think and feel are very wrong about that.

My ex and three kids had a Doberman named Nikki.
She was as much part of our family as one of my children.

On the first Xmas day for my 1 year old son, and 1 year old Nikki,
my wife noticed Nikki, who loved rawhide bones, wouldn't touch hers.

My son was ripping wrapping paper off of presents and Nikki looked sad.
You see, her present was unwrapped, and why was she being treated like this?

I took the bone to the other room, wrapped it, and brought it back out.
She was very excited, held the present down with one paw, and tore the
    wrapping away.

You can't tell me that dog didn't have feelings...

Makes u see how loyal a dog really is n how much love they give. Makes me value my relationship with my dog even more n makes me hate those that mistreat dogs (or any animal) even more.

My girl sent me the story in my email, I posted it on another forum and now I find it here too. Very sad, but nice too. Labradors are wonderful animals. I have a Lab named Ben and he truly is my best friend in the world. We have two other dogs but my Lab is by far the most sensitive. If one of us is at work, he is not really himself. He seems to need to have both other dogs and both of us around all at the same time. Nothing makes him happier.

Goldens Retrievers have many of the same personality traits as labs, namely extreme devotion to family. Our golden, who our two kids named Goldie, raised them thru high school and college. (If you've had a golden or a lab with kids in the house you know what I mean when I use the term raised). When they moved out for good after college, she missed them terribly. The last time both kids came back to visit at the same time was Superbowl Sunday. Needless to say, Goldie was ecstatic. I don't think her tail quit wagging the entire weekend. Both kids left at the same time on Sunday afternoon to fly back to their respective homes. Goldie collapsed and died several hours after both the kids left. The vet said she had aggressive abdominal cancer that grew very fast and usually goes undetected until it becomes fatal. The vet had no doubt (and I agree with him) that she hung on until she could see both kids one last time. Then she died peacefully and quickly, with the same dignity as she exhibited her entire life.
Sometimes dogs' devotion to their families leaves me speachless.

We've had 6 Dobies & 1 Lab. All but 1 lived to an old age, 12 -13 yrs. And all but 1 are buried on our property. We've shed too many tears to have another dog. It's been about 10 yr since we've had one. Now we have 3 cats, and another 2 buried here. And another lost to coyotes. It doesn't get much easier. They're either adopted cats from the vet or showed up at our barn and migrated to the house. It was interesting at first when I 'd be in a horses stall feeding them and a cat would jump on their back.

When I was younger, we had a great white pyronese. He stayed outside and was a great home security system and not a bad hunter either. I still remember the smell of a few day old deer strewn about the yard ICK. Anyway I raised Bart from a pup and shortly after my 18th bday I come home to find Bart in the yard, having trouble breathing. I called my mom and dad and told them get home asap. For the next hour I sat curled up on Bart crying and holding him waiting for mom and dad. They both showed up with about 10 minutes of each other and another 15 minutes or so passed and he was gone. He was so grateful he waited til everyone could say goodbye. Ill miss him forever

My wife and I are blessed to be owned by a wonderful Australian Shepherd. It's really been tough having a dog that's smarter than I am. He anticipates each of our activities and we've gotten to the point where we spell things since he understands so much and has such a huge vocabulary that he fully understands. Wish I could find him a job; my wife and could probably retire and let him earn the living.
