If you do the 1911 with the custom Bawanna Super Thins, his monogram or even a sentiment from his dad carved into it would be a nice touch.
    Very interesting...

The basic 1911 with the special grips is a good thought. Doubt he would ever carry that so it would be a range or perhaps an under glass keepsake. Not a bad thing.

I know where there's a shiny new Remington R1 reasonable that might fill the bill. Got vetoed for me but I'm sure she'll bless it for him.

Keep the wheels turning, the J frames not a bad idea either really.
Bawana, what's your son's passion. The gift is for him, not for you. We all would like our sons to follow in our footsteps, but to each his own. Ask him what he would like for graduation. If he says a new Ferrari slap him.

Baseball game is cool. I fondly remember the few times my dad took me.

If you do the 1911 grips, carve a special sentiment on the inside and never tell him. Keep the grips that come with the gun together with the gun. That way, in the future, if it ever comes a point in his life where he feels like he needs to sell the gun... He will probably take your grips off (to keep them) and see your special words "time capsule" on the back sides.

This was exactly my thought as well. I've always subscribed to the Kerby9mm line, just ask and get them what they want.

Why waste money or time on something they don't want?

I shall restart my thinking process, difficult as that is sometimes.

My youngest graduates this spring too Bawanna, I have NO idea what to get her. I'd build her a computer for her dorm room, but her boyfriend bought her a laptop for Christmas so no doubt she would rather use that.

And I really should order a 91/30 Mosin Nagant to go with my Nagant revolver and my M44. Only right I think and it's only 109 bucks.

That way for sure a Ruger SR1911 will show up and my marble sack is low again.

                A vicious circle me thinks.

Now I gotta come up with a set of knock your socks off one of a kind grips huh?
I have a RIA exactly like you are mentioning. Mine has never had a problem in probably 1000 rounds. I think he would like it. It will definitely need some "Bawanna Grips" as the ones that come on it are more basic than basic.

I bought a $20 set of cocobolo grips for looks first then a rubber set of Pachmayr grips with finger grooves that shoot sweet and give it a wicked ready for battle look

The Rock is a really good Basic gun IMHO and you cant beat the price. Armscor (maker of RIA) is also making the Basic Para 1911 now too.

And you really should get that 91/30 like you're talking about too. Tell Mrs. Bawanna we think it's a good idea too.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

I have your answer. The exact same graduation gifts my brothers and myself received from the folks. The gifts were used for a number of years AND they sent a very clear message in what the folks expected out of us.

                  A set of luggage.

Trust me, it'll get used AND he'll get the hint!

I have a nice Para compact, oficers size that I purchased the day my dad passed away, I thought about just passing that on to him for graduation.

It of course already has some of my grips on it, I could make some new special ones.

It would be safer for him if he did decide to shoot and he could easily carry it.
I might ponder that idea some too.

Nothing but guns is coming to mind, guess I'm one tracked.

Just because only guns come to mind doesn't make it a bad idea. Just because he's not as into guns as you or your older son doesn't make it bad. He's a middle or end child. They tend to rebel to find their own niche in the family. But ultimately he is your son.

Give him a piece of yourself. Even better show him a legacy that comes from your dad to you and to him. Being a middle or end child has it's downside. Parents tend to lavish loads of attention on the oldest and kind of raise the youngers on remote control.

Show him something that means a great deal to you. Something you wish to pass on to only him, not an older brother. Make it uniquely his but is a piece of you (as he is undeniably). Only a dad can identify what that will be: you're the only one who can.

Make it a meaningful gift. Not instant gratification. Something that is long lasting who's meaning may not be clear until later in life.

My dad gave me his favorite watch as my HS graduation present. It is a Seiko yacht timer watch, something I have an affinity for as well. I still have the watch and use it for racing. It is not only a cherished item, but one that is used. If something happened to it during a race, I'd me upset, but it would be an acceptable loss as there is no point in having something like that sitting under glass. Fortunately my dad is still with me, I might feel differently about risking the watch later.

I'd think along similar lines with a present for your son, something cherished but also well used. I like the idea of the Ruger Gunsight Scout rifle. I am a lefty and that rifle feels great in my hands. There is a large canvas to be worked and add the fathers touch.

Here is a pic like the watch my dad gave me:

                            Kahr PM9, P380, T9, CW9, and a crapload of Glocks.

In our case the wife seems to lavish on the youngest. She's always been fair to all and not short changed or played favorites but I think he's her favorite.

They all 3 have been great kids with not bad issues.

I'm leaning more and more into passing down the gun I bought the day of my dad's passing. I think it will work real well and like the watch be a keepsake.

I love that watch, never seen one like it.

Can you integrate the baseball thing into the grips. I will show my ignorance of all things wood: Can they be fashioned out of ash? with a blonder finish? Can something be burned into them to make them his? ie Lousiville Slugger style? Is that stupid?
