  • Which gun?

Ok which of your guns do you enjoy shooting the most?
I have to say my favorite to shoot is my Springfield United States Rifle cal. 30 model 1 or better known as M1 Garand. I absolutely love laying on the ground in prone position, getting slung up in the musty loop sling, inserting the 8 round clip of 30-06 in the magazine and hearing the bolt slam forward. Resting my cheek on that fine piece of walnut as I go through my 6 steps of firing the shot as I relax into my sling. I close my eyes to check my NPOA and think of where my rifle has been, who it was issued to. If it could really talk. I open my eyes up to see I am still on my target and begin my trigger squeeze the rifle belches and roars as it sends that 150 grn piece of copper and lead down range as I absorb the recoil and return with the target sitting on top of my front sight post I hear and see the bullet impact the steel 500 yards away as I release my trigger and begin the squeeze once again. The sound of freedom! The sound of Americas Rifle, if I could just understand what it was saying.

Tough question. I have a bunch of old MILSURP's, and all of them have history and character showing, I wouldn't change that. I guess for me it depends or comes down to which one I'm shooting at the moment. I still want a Garand, and maybe one of the .308 versions, as well as an '03A3, but am content to wait of time and money for now. I personally love old guns, and even black powder (none of this modern in line crap need apply), of course, I lean more and more towards a flintlock and use percussion caps only for a revolver, when I shoot that. I have no good answer.
Attitude: it takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile...and 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

The olive branch is considered a symbol of peace, and good will. Last time I checked, it's still a switch.

Great image, Mudcat. I hope that all of those wonderful weapons like that can be returned here from South Korea, so that more of the American public can have access to those cherished weapons of the gallant men and women who fought for our freedom and the freedom of others... in two or three wars, at least!

          Changing Seasons of the Gun

Right now it's a toss up between my Sig Sauer P220 with the 5.47" stainless P220 Sport barrel.
And my tricked out Glock EXO G27/357 with a 4.16" dual ported Storm Lake
black Isonite QPQ on stainless barrel.

The Sig is so perfect I'm almost afraid to shoot it too much - LOL!
It's almost too good to put a bunch of rounds through.

The Glock I'll blast through boxes of ammo and want more.
It has the distinctive sound of the 357 Sig, almost like an AK47.
With the extended ported barrel and Ghost Rocket trigger it has
very little muzzle rise or recoil and is a tack driver.

So I guess in the end it's the Glock.
How sad is that - LOL!

I'm getting professional trigger job and SRT kit installed on both my Sigs (P220/45 & P239/357).

In about 90 days two barrels will arrive.
          1) Storm Lake P220/45 5.10" extended dual ported black Isonite QPQ on stainless
          2) Bar-Sto P239/357 extended triple ported stainless steel

          then we will see...

BTW a close third is my MK40 Elite.
I think of it much like my P220.
Almost too nice to shoot a bunch.
It's a pristine Elite you know - LOL!

Both the MK40 and the P220 I usually just run three mags through.
          Smile.
          And put them away.

Favorite rifle to shoot is my M1a with match trigger. Favorite handgun is the Ruger standard .22. Next favorite is a Para Ordnance .45 with lda trigger.

I really like shooting shotguns. My favorite is probably an early 1950s Ithaca 37 solid rib 12 gauge. It has more mechanical heaven than any other gun I own with an action that just begs you to operate it. The trigger is sweet too.

I like shooting all my rifles and pistols but non even comes close to the joy of shooting my M1 Garand. Many rifles are pretty and shoot fine but the M1 Garand has a soul that no other rifle has. Just pick one up feel the walnut stock, roll it over in your hands, look at it's lines as it's a work of art. Then insert a loaded clip in the reciever and give the op rod a slap and listen to the bolt slam foward like a run away train. Look down the sites line them up on your target, squeeze the trigger and let that 30 06 round fly,and then and only then will you undersand why so many cherish these wonderful weapons..
You can not pick up an M1 Garand and not wonder where it has been who used it in battle, and what part did it play in the freedoms we enjoy today.
It truely is an American Classic. Just like the original Colt 1911.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

My favorite is my 10/22. I have had four of them over the past 30+ years and the one I bought at ****'s Sporting Goods in 2001 is unbelievably accurate. I mean bolt action like accuracy with sub-sonic ammo. Using a 3x9x50 Bushnell scope I have come close to 1 MOA at 100m. The wind and my own limitations have prevented me from seeing how good it really is. But I regularly get sub 1/2 at 50m. Just incredible. I can shoot the strings holding hanging targets at 25+m with no problems. My favorite gun by a mile!

I have another 10/22 bought used in 2008 that is normal minute of squirrel accurate (2-2.5 inches at 50m) This my tinker-with-it gun. I can do what I want with it and it remains the same great gun. The other 10/22 has been left bone stock for fear of messing up the magical alignment of the barrel and receiver. I keep it clean and that's all.

Both are incredibly reliable with all types of ammo and I shoot them as often as I can.

In pistols, my favorite is my K9. Easiest to shoot well, very light weight, point of aim is the most natural and accurate of all my current guns. Previously I would have said that about my USAF issued Smith & Wesson Model 15 Combat Master Piece 38SP.

In the early 1980's I briefly carried a 1911 in the Coast Guard and was not impressed. It wasn't until I transferred into the USAF SFS that I was issued a 38SP and found out how good I was with a handgun. At some bases when we qualified semi-annually we would all put in $5 and winner takes all. I never lost with that gun. Once, when one would bet anymore, I promised to shoot weak hand only. I still won. (Mostly because I always practice with both hands, being ambidextrous helps)

The end of the 80's saw the introduction of the Beretta M9 and I have never been a fan, even though I had to carry one for almost 10ys. It is reliable and accurate, but nothing to brag about. Strictly a ho-hum kind of gun.

Talking about my favorite guns has made me want to shoot! I am going out Saturday, come rain or shine! (I've got a whole bunch of new targets to blast too!)
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

All real good ones! I believe me and Popeye should get together and reunite our M1s for a day on the range.

I'd like to join that party with mine as well. I've never experienced the en bloc clip boinging out. All our ranges are one round at a time.
I need to get it out to the woods so I can get the full experience.

Could bring my little M1 Carbine along for variety too.

As far as handguns go, it would be my most shot and doggiest circa '94 K40. I think it's finally stoned in, tuned, and broken in.
With the long guns I would give the nod to my Rem 700 in 6mm Rem. It's just a pleasure to shoot with a jewell trigger set very light. You just think the shot.

It would be between the SIG P220 and the HK45c. The HK is an oz lighter, has less recoil, and has better ergonomics. The P220 has a half inch longer barrel and sight radius, better sights [SIG Lites], and I think I shoot it a bit better.

I got nothin to compete with all this nostalgic history of the M1 Garand. I have no battle rifles that helped protect our freedoms. But what I do have that I like to shoot the most is my Ruger 10/22. With the Bushnell TRS-25 I have on it its a tack driver. While it is a fun gun to shoot, its the gun I like to shoot the most because I can put 1000 rounds through it for less than $50.
