  • Working as security guard tomorrow

My good friend's husband passed away and the service is tomorrow. She asked if I'd watch over the ranch while the memorial was going on, and said I would. The husband's kids are being very hateful towards her, they expect to be able to walk through the house and take anything they want, when the will stated what they were entitled too, and they have got their stuff. But they came into the house and started grabbing pictures off the wall and all kinds of stuff and she had to tell them no, they weren't left those items. Most of the stuff in the house is stuff my friend bought after she sold her house and got married to David. He was basically broke when they married and she bought furniture and everything needed to make the house a home, plus bought him a new pickup, which the kids think they should get. Anyway, she's afraid they will send someone out to ransack the house while the memorial is going on, so I'm going to watch the house. I'm taking a baseball bat, an AK and a couple 30 round mags, my M&P Pro, and my CW45 for a concealed weapon I can keep on me without it showing. Also burglars read the obits and break in houses while services are going on. I'm just going to wait in the house in case anyone tries to break in, or maybe have to go outside if someone pulls in and starts hitching up a horse trailer or something. I do have a Security T-shirt I got doing a concert gig once that I will probably wear. For liablities sake, I just want to stay in the house and keep people out of it. And yell out the window if someone tries to hitch up a trailer or something and be able to fire a warning shot in case they don't listen. I'll dial 911 first off if anyone shows up. I figure anyone showing up during the service is up to no good as all his friends will be at the service. Any suggestions? Or things I haven't thought of and should? I know you can't shoot someone over stealing stuff if they are retreating, but I think you can hold them at gunpoint until the Sheriff arrives.
This woman is like a sister to me, and I just don't want her house to get trashed or stuff disappearing while she's at the memorial.

I guess Kansas laws are a bit more restrictive than Texas.

It seems like you have a plan, though. Your presence will be enough, hopefully.

    Good luck.

Do you or she have any sort of relationship with the local police/sheriff?
I would strongly urge you to let them know what's happening ahead of time.
Perhaps they could make a few more "routine" rounds near the place. Just to there's no misunderstandings if and when the SHTF.

me and ur intentions are great,I would wear that shirt for sure, pre-contact the sheriff dept or police dpet and adcvise them as to whatur doing etc . I would in no way pull a gun on those kids PERIOD. I would advise the kids to get off the property or u wascalling the law immediately, withy cell phone in hand. Blood is thicker than water and as dear as a friend as she is, I would take the safe road.

          Just sayin.

You are so right Bawanna, Damn vultures picking over the bones is what I see. Death brings out the very worst in people, all they can think about is me me me. They could care less what happens to my friend, they throw her out on the street penniless if they could.
I don't really know any of the cops out that way, but is a good idea to contact the police and let them know I'll be there. The kids will should all be at the service, so I shouldn't have to deal with them, but them sending a friend out to steal stuff is what I'm concerned about. I doubt if any guns come into play, but better to have them than wish I'd brought them. I think I'll see if my friend can contact the police for me, she knows them better, and her husband was a good friend of the local chief. I so wish I could just go to the service, but she is so scared they are going to pull something that I'll watch the place for her. Yesterday they had a SHTF situation, the kids wanted to comeout and go through the house again, and she told them no, they've already got everything that was left to them and the oldest boy gave her a very evil eat sh!t and die look. They think their entitled to everything in the house because their his kids, and my friend has only been married to her husband for 7 years, plus I think the kids mom is planting bugs in their ear about stuff. If that woman could have kept her pants on then they'd probably still be married. What really sucks is Stacy found things the will didn't mention that she thought they should have and gave it to them, and they STILL want more. They want to take the things Stacy bought for the house even. The little bastards found out she had a friend coming to stay with her, so they moved the day they were coming out to get their stuff to Monday, luckily her son and I were able to be there help her stand up to them. Stacy is taking Chemo for lung cancer and not doing very well, and I'm sure they thought they could bully her around until she burst into tears and told them F it, take what you want.
Boy were they pissed when they found out we were there to watch her back.
I told her she probably ought to get a restraining order against the kids to keep them from bothering her.
Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.

That restraining order is a good idea, as you can't be there 24/7, and she doesn't need to be a prisoner in her own home and fear leaving her stuff.
Encourage her to do it...sooner than later.

I think you should find someone else to do guard duty and attend the service if that is your real wish.
Her calling the Sheriff might have them doing some close watching during the time of the service. Then you could be there afterwards.

Damn I hate vultures worse than anything.

My dad prior to his passing must have had a idea as he gave me a few things early. When he passed his wife shut us out, got nothing. I expected nothing and wanted nothing but there were many trinkets in his shop of no value to anyone but him and myself.

I got nothing. I hate vultures.

I don't mind missing the service, it's not something David wanted, it was forced on Stacy by the kids costing her an extra $4000.00 and not one of the little buttheads has offered to chip in a dime, yet they want to come take everything she owns. I really don't want to be at the service and be around those people anyway. David wanted no service just a quiet ride up to the top of a hill and have his ashes scattered with his close friends and family in attendance. She doesn't really have any other guy friend she would trust to be in her home while she was away. I'll just have my own little time of reflection and prayer, and keep the home safe.
The kids were all left some of David's stuff, one kid got all his guns, another got a horse and all David's tack, and the daughter got all his photography equipment, plus other things Stacy thought they should have.
One of the kids still has display case that is full of little knick-knacks they Stacy and David bought together, and the kid was furious when Stacy told him he could have the case, but she was keeping the knick-knacks. How petty is that. Bawanna, I'm sorry about how things went down when your dad passed. But these kids have it in their heads that they are entitled to anything they want in the house, and that is not what the Will states. And like I said, most of the things in the house Stacy bought when she sold her home. David was pretty much broke when they married and she put a lot of money into things for the house and for David, but the kids think it should all be theirs. Vultures is right.

I have a ton of vulture stories. I've had many many widows come to me both privately and through the police dept to give them an idea on what they had for guns left by loved ones.
Some had already checked with shops that were just gonna rip them off big time.
I've been offered some wonderful firearms for my efforts, all refused painfully since the widows needed the money and I didn't have it and I've lost a bunch I sorely wanted just cause I couldn't scam them and tell them a low price.

My mom had a significant other for over 20 years with like 6 kids he hadn't seen in 10 years. I got along great with him and he had a ton of guns, good old stuff.
The vultures were circling and he was the best dad that ever lived before they hauled his body out of the hospital. I spent over a month putting a value on all his guns. My mom divided the proceeds either in money or guns to all the kids even though they deserved and were left nothing.

I do so hate vultures. Does anyone want to know how I really feel about vultures? I hate em..................

                        Tom,

I'm real glad to hear you're going to involve the local police. I saw nothing good coming from you defending the property. Be there for the widow and for your own peace of mind but let the police handle running folks off.

Unless you're threatened with imminent personal bodily harm you cannot pull a weapon on someone. It's going to backfire on the Good Samaritan and the vultures will go scott free.
