I'd also ask you to check how much of your money goes to the needy, when you can choose the Red Cross, United Way, or Salvation Army to donate too. One of the 3 gives over 90% of each dollar collected to help those in need. With the other two, less than 60% of your dollar actually goes to those who need help. The rest goes to "overhead". New cars and high salaries for the executives, and things like that.

Just don't confuse the name of HSUS with other legitmate Human Societies in the country. HSUS is on par with PETA, hands down. They give a bad name to other organizations that do good that happen to have HS in their titles.

As always, do research before you donate your hard earned money to any charity.

This. I know around here we have a local humane society.

The key is to give locally where you can see the results. I always ask how much of each dollar do they get to keep. Some local charities have to send
as much as 60% to their nationals (i.e., Girl Scouts). Others pay a small
constant dollar fee for admin and fund raising. As a rule, I usually don't send donations to any of the big national charities. Even if they do good works, their overhead is enormous as are their executive salaries and perks.
