  • Tom Givens Instructor Course

I'm taking Tom Given's 3 day Firearms Instructor Course in September. www.rangemaster.com 3 Days, 1000+ rounds. YEAH! So far I've been through 2 instructor schools, this will give me yet another perspective and continue my training.

Also, I teach my first NRA Basic Pistol class (women only) on August 26th.

my Springfield XDm competition 9mm. I've been using it for all of my classes since I have the nice holster, mag pouches, etc, and it's high capacity.

I've taken four deffensive pistol classes with KR Training near Austin, totally well worth it. Can't say I've ever taken a three day class, let us know how you liked it...have fun!

well I survived. It was very intense to say the least. I'm sore, sunburned, my hands are chewed up, and I'm exhausted, but it was well worth it. I shot over 1,000 rounds running thru various qualification courses and drills. We also had some class time, gave presentations, and took an 80 question written exam.

Tom is one tough d00d, but one of the best. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I'd do it again if given the opportunity. If any of you ever get the chance, you should take a class from him. His range in Memphis offers classes every day, and he and his wife travel to AR, OK, KS, TX, GA, etc giving classes as well.

I learned over the course of this class that my Springfield XDm Competition model just isn't the gun for me. The long spongy trigger has given me fits since day one, but over the weekend of non-stop shooting I learned a few other things about the gun that can't really be fixed for me to continue training with it. It's a great gun, but just not "my" gun. Looking at an M&P next, gonna shoot hubby's a few times before I make my decision.

Congrats and very interesting about your gun. I'm taking Tom's Combined Skills class Oct 12, 13 and 14 in Chandler. I was hoping to use my Kahr as it is my EDC but was told we were going to shoot 800 to 1000 rounds too. I may be using my Glock 19 instead due to capacity and I have 10 magazines for it. I'm looking forward to training with Tom and Spencer.

I thought about taking that class as well, but I don't know if I'll be recovered by then, lol.

You'll need a high capacity mag for sure. There was a guy in our class with a 1911 and he was hating life with the constant reloads, especially during qualifications.

Spencer is fantastic. I hope to get more training time in with him since he's close by.

Their range dog, Skeeter, kept everyone in line.

the XDm is fine for an hour or so of leisurely shooting at the range, but with that much shooting in 3 days it really destroyed my hands. There was a little ridge under the trigger guard that I'd not noticed previously, by the end of the first day the side of my driving (middle) finger had a huge blister and later sore on it where it rubbed. Also, the hard plastic rough grips did a number on my hands. Maybe I'm just a softie, but I'm hurting today.

1911 shooter hating life? Hard to comprehend.

Maybe some mods to the grip surface would eliminate the downfalls your experiencing with the rough texture. A little wood burner and some sandpaper can make a world of difference on a tupperware frame.

                        Would five 12 rounders work?
(I'll actually have ten within a week...)
                        And how much ammo?
                        1000? 1500?

                        thanks

this is after the 1st day. again, it rubbed up against the bottom of the trigger guard. There was a sharp edge there that I never noticed previously. I taped it up to get thru days 2 and 3, but it's really sore today.

yeah, I know, suck it up.

I usually kept my mags at 12-14 rounds and I was fine. I don't like maxing them out with the full 17.

I took a case of 1,000 and ran out, ended up using about 200 to 250 more rounds by the time it was all over.

we gently filed and sanded down that place on the trigger guard after day 1, but the damage had already been done so it only got worse as time went on.

the large square knobby parts covering the entire grip were rather painful as well after that much shooting.
